Lords of Destruction and Admin rights

I appreciate your response, but I've already tried the Power User setting.

I have the problem of the Lords of Destruction expansion set not seeing the CD even though it is present. According to Blizzard, you need a patch (which I installed) and you have to run it as a user with full admin rights. There are a few other things to try when I get home, such as limiting the range of CD drive letters, etc., but I have a feeling they're not going to work.

The admin rights issue really irks me. Part of the reason I went to Win2K was to gain control over the computer, both from the point of view as a parent and as the 'techie' in the family.

Does anyone know a way around this? Perhaps editing the registry?

I think a Power User can do it too... you could just assign the user account the permission to install software (which lets that account write to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE in the registry... which is what D2 needs to do)

Usually you only need admin rights to install software but D2 seems to play with the registry every time you run it.

Somebody did post a way around it but I can't find that post here (it was a long time ago). You still needed to give some permissions to the user account.

I had a similar problem with both d2 and the exp on win2000. The only way that I could get it running was to uninstall both, and then log into the pc under the admin account and reinstall both. Then when I play I just log in under my account and have no troubles!

yep that's how most software works, so definetely try that if you haven't already
