LPT Port help!

I'm trying to install a printer which uses a Serial cable but while installing it there was no LPT port listed to assign to the printer.
so, I restarted my computer and entered the bios to ensure I had the port enabled, and sure enough it wasnt. After I enabled it, and started my computer I kept getting a black screen saying "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer" at the very top. not thinking too to much of it, i restarted and windows loaded, except all my hardware drivers seemed to become uninstalled! I couldn't use my cd-rom to install the new port because it became unlisted, and also my display adapter driver became uninstalled and it was only using 16 colors instead of the usualy 32bit, and i couldnt change the resolution or color or install new drivers without my CD-ROM! I also noticed that under the Hardware Profiles tab, that everything was running in "MS-DOS compatibility mode" or something similer to that.

So, i disabled the port in the BIOS again, and started up without a single problem! and my desktop was the exact same way it was before, except I had to change it to 32 bit color mode and change the resolution again.

Can someone please help me install a printer port without messing everything else up?

4321 SeaGate 4GB Hard Drive
Samsung 4GB hard drive
44x CD-ROM
192MB of Ram (2x 32MB PC100, and 1 128MB PC100)

Ok, stupid question time. I'm looking at a website with your M748MR board, and I don't see a LPT port....(granted it's a Pentium 2 board so therefore it should have one, right?).

If everything gets fouled up after you enable the LPT port, the only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that perhaps there is something wrong with it.

I take it, this is the first time you have tried to use it?

Also, when you say the printer uses a Serial cable, you're absolutely sure it's serial and not parallel. The LPT ports, from as far as I know about hardware, cannot be assigned to the Serial ports. Serial ports are COM ports, and parallel ports are LPT ports.

To sum up: Sounds like something's screwy with your LPT port on your motherboard. Especially since Windows gets all bent out of shape over it, and when you turn it off (like it was originally), everything works fine.

Also, what version of Windows? (I'm going to guess either 95/98)

And what make/model of printer?

i always get serial and paralel ports mixed up!
the printer port is a paralel port (paralel being a blue or pink female connector), and whenever i enable it thats when things go all screwy.,

Yes, I have tried the printer port before and have had it working.
I'm running Windows 98 SE

and i'm starting to think that maybe installing windows with paralel port in the bios disabled may have done something.

My printer is an IBM PS/2
 
With enable/disable option, is there a list of ports/interrupts to assign to LPT? Try toggling those around.
 
You may want to try flashing your bios to the latest version. I also found a little thing on gateway computer's having a problem with parallel ports. The solution I found it on was for a zip drive problem, but just substitute iomega zip drive for ibm printer :)

    It's actually remarkably easy to make mayonnaise though. Fun fact, it USED to kind of be a French mother sauce. I believe that Careme considered it one, it may have been aioli but that has also built a different meaning than it used to.     Depending on how you pour the oil the consistency can vary wildly, but that's true for most emulsions. I can only make about two quarts at a time with my robo coup, and if I have to make several in series because I forgot to order it becomes really obvious even when I do it. We have to wait and mix them all together to make sure we have the same thing.

She can do it no problem, I've worked with her there.

    They won't get feel down while they do the thermometer, but we didn't have an instant read probe when I was learning. Like they did but god knows how off it is, you HAD to do it by feel. Even if the chef was fine with me bringing my own, it takes too long. Poke and know
