I was walking down a hallway. The end was in plain view, and it was a sight to see, it was beautiful.
I died once. That was a while ago, it was in a hospital. You see, I lost my pulse, and I did not know where I put it. Well, the doctors, they couldn't find it either. So they shocked me, once, twice, and after the third time they gave up. That's what you do, after the third time you give up. It's a rule, and you are supposed to follow rules. But you know what? I found my pulse, it was under the TV guide.
I had a garden once. It had a hedge maze, it extended seven feet up. In the dead ends there were rose bushes. Red roses. Classy I know. There were great pines that I had grown haphazardly around the edge of the garden. That's what a great garden needs, pines, roses, and mazes. But I had realized that roses don't do so well in a maze, it takes too long to find them and water them.
I had a girlfriend once. She was like a pet, a thing that I owned. Love, it was a sort of joke back then, a game. I played the game like we all did, or at least tried. They say you shouldn't drink red and white wine at the same time, you know, the druggies. That's what they say. I think my girlfriend was a druggie.
I had a walrus once. His name was Eddy. Eddy the Walrus, he sang songs about love and purity. He was a painter, he donated to charity, and he enjoyed classic rock. Eddy never had a girlfriend, he tried his best to be his best, but no girls ever looked at Eddy the Walrus. I think it was because he was a Walrus.
There was a skull along the hallway. It was freshly ripped out, one eye still sat in the meat around the socket, there was gray matter dripping out the back, and the tongue was hanging out through some broken teeth. Most of the muscle and fat seemed to have been removed, although bits and pieces still remained. The empty eye socket had a mas of maggots sitting in it, perhaps the cause of the missing eye. They were little, couldn't be more than a few days old. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.
Eddy the Walrus never did get a girlfriend, although a girl did say she used to have a crush on him. She was a friend, and Eddy wasn't so smart, he should have known what she meant was that she still had a crush on him. But it's fine now, he isn't here anymore, I shot him and hid the pulse.
I however, did have a girlfriend once. She liked to please me, until she had to go away. I never saw her again, and forgot the rules to the game. I later found she had died in a game of Russian Roulette. It's funny, I didn't even remotely care, it was a game after all.
My garden, it confounded many a guest. But those rose bushes, I just couldn't find them all, and slowly they began to wither. It was too hot for pines, and they dried up and fell to the ground. The hedges, well, lets just say that I don't want to go bushwhacking. My garden had died.
My death wasn't a happy one. Three times. Three times!? What were they thinking? What did they expect me to do? Under the TV Guide, that's where I found it. It brought me back, sure did, but I missed one thing. It wasn't my pulse, it belonged to that girl who was crushing on Eddy. I guess I shot her too.
Beauty had died. The end of the hallway was no longer in view and I was disoriented. I walked the wrong way, and now I was going to die. I was holding what seemed to be a rotting skull. Madness had taken over, government was not corrupt, global warming was not a religion, Jonas Brothers were a legitimate band, republicans were saving the Earth and Obama was the Anti-Christ. Beauty had died. Teenagers had opinions, the moths were attracted to the darkness, good stories were happy stories, and mixing red and white wine was not a druggies excuse. Russian Roulette was a fun game, good guys got girlfriends, gardens were paradise, and I had lived a long life. I had gone mad, and I walked down the path, holding the most beautiful object imaginable. A dismembered rotting skull.
