Making a units attack ranged against ground

Is there anyway to make a unit that is normally melee to have a longer ranged attack against ground? I looked at orb abilities, but all those do is enable the second attack type, which has less priority than the first attack type. So orbs would only work if the unit in question could not target ground with it's first attack.

I also didn't see any trigger functions that would allow this, but I might have missed something.

you wan the mili unit to hav range but it stil say its range is mili?

I'm not sure what you mean. I want melee heroes' attacks to become ranged when they have a certain item (even against ground), orb abilities won't work because all they do is enable the second attack, which is only used if the first attack can't be used. So that throws orbs out the window. Unless there is a way to disable the first attack that I am unaware of.
