I'm new around here, and Ijust finished a 12-Player melee map, so I was wondering whether people could pass judgement on whether it would be good enough for me to submit on Maps'n'Mods. Many people may have heard of me if you visit there, as I am the #1 melee mapper there at the moment (according to the Top 20).

So, can you please pass judgement on this map, as I personally had qualms about submitting it, as I personally didn't feel it was up to scratch. Please give it a rating out of 5 (?/5), and why you voted (eg. errors, imbalances etc.)

Name: Training Grounds
Genre: Melee
Suggested Players: 12 Players; Reccomended Teams 3v3v3v3, FFA
Size: Large-Epic
Tileset: Sunken Ruins
Description: These ancient ruins once served as a training grounds for alliances that desired to test their skills in battle. With equal access to every team's start locations singling out one team will prove difficult and unwise. Balance is the key to victory.

If you fancy checking out my other 32 *submitted* melee maps (I have another 20-odd waiting to submit), go to http://maps.worldofwar.net/users?id=216940.

Thanks,

It's really good visually, I've yet to test it online but with 11 computers playing it's pretty fun. Are you sure it's fair with waygates only being in the top right and bottom left? Because the teams at the top left and bottom right are therefore less susceptible to attack.

The reason there are waygates are to balance up the imba's with distances from the middle of the map. This is fine, unless somebody can point out a reason why it isn't.

Thanks for the feedback, but what about a score ?/5 ?

Well visually I love it - I really like the sunken ruins set anyway and to see it so well used is nice. There's plenty of creeps to and you still have all the normal tactics available to you (unlike some maps where bases are rediculous distances away). It's very symmetrical aswell and this adds to the feeling the map is well designed yet there's still a lot of detail with random mushrooms or reeds being placed here or there.

Erm. Before this turns into an essay 4/5. I barely ever give 5 because I think that 5 is perfect and everything can be improved.

4/5 is still good though - I'm happy.

+REP

Here is how I consider ratings:

1/5 - horrible
2/5 - poor
3/5 - excellent
4/5 - good
5/5 - excellent

ok...i tested it and heres wat i think....the taverns surrounding creeps should be stronger...and the bases surrounding creep should be weaker.... it is very hard to creep when you lose half your beggining army....but I really like the terraining, doodads, and the way you placed your trees....

Im gonna give it a 3 1/2 /5

so three and a half over 5 :D

if you would fix the creep issue then it would get u to 4/5...thats my opinion.. also...was it just luck or something but every time I killed a lvl 6 creep....it always dropped a tome.... if it was becuz u set the drop to 100%...set it to 75% maybe ;) I also REALLY like the expanding mine placements....problem with that though...at some expanding mines like in the midddle where no1's base should start... there is WAY too much space....make that space smaller so yes its a 3 1/2 /5 :D

Overall its pretty good :D just fix those issues :D

You can choose your race. Just choose it the way you'd normally do for a melee map.

Krakka: That's the idea of having 5 green and 3 brown camps per player; I'll look into this.

About the items, if you look at Blizzard, they do a very similar thing to what I did, with controlling item drops. Through making 50 maps, I'm sorry but I'm going to have to trust my own knowledge.

Thanks anyway; +REP

kc102: Argh! I hate typos. Anyways, that should have been "4/5 - average".

Thanks for pointing that out.

Axe.killer: OK, thanks for that - it appears, between your post and Kraaka's, that the creeps are a real problem.

Thanks again; +REP.

kc102: Thanks a lot. But was there anything that needed improving, which made you give it 4.5 and not 5?

Sargon: Exactly what I was going to say :shades:

THANKS EVERYONE - KEEP IT COMING!

Terrain/Doodads - 4.5/5 Good use of Noise/Smooth, terrain layering and ramps, but some waterfalls look a bit out of place.

Gameplay - 3.5/5 Average score because you havent brought anything new to the table, but nothing has been restricted. However this is good in some respects as some players prefer the basic game, with no unbalanced units.

So thats an overall 4/5 score on the "Nox-o-Meter", to improve the gameplay I would suggest adding custom units and races to have a bigger 'Re-playability' factor.

It's a melee map. There can't be any custom units.

NoxMortus: Thanks for that. By the way, where were the waterfalls which look "out of place"?

Also, as Sargon said, it's melee so I can't add any custom units.

Anyways, thanks for the feedback; +REP

Oh, Sorry that's just 1 waterfall out of place (the only one I think) I thought i saw more earlier lol. It's the waterfall just to the right of red's start point.

Sargon, are you sure you cant have custom units in a melee map? I thought it was just triggers you cant add... If it's true then scrap my earlier review, I'd give a 5/5 for gameplay I guess, since theres nothing to add to a melee map.

NoxMortus: Thanks for following up my query - I'll check it when I start mapping in an hour or two. I'll give you some more rep for bothering to respond when it lets me to - stupid "Spread Rep Around"...

About the custom unit 'dispute' (as such), customising any unit in any way renders the map non-melee.

About the items, if you look at Blizzard, they do a very similar thing to what I did, with controlling item drops.

uhmm so u mean they always drop?.... or r u just saying u planted the creeps there and did no changes on the item drop and stuff like blizzard does?

Well...I got a question....don't u get bored making melee maps? I mean (unless its just me) barely nebody will play a melee map made by somebody else...they will just play the 1 blizzard selected...well im just asking....but mapping IS for the FUN of it.. so :D...Good Job making 50 maps!!

Kraaka: I follow the basic pattern and guideline that Blizzard use for their item drops, as to not create any major imbas.

And no, I don't get bored making melee, because I enjoy it, and I'm one of the most respected mappers, viewers and raters at Maps'n'Mods for both melees and customs. About the whole playing thing, a lot of my friends in real life, as well as from Maps'n'Mods play them, and I generally make them for them, so if they want something I make it for them. I understand that most people play the ladder maps, but I also know that a lot of people enjoy playing a "custom" melee once in a while also.

Wow - the change in the stats are major. I kind of knew it was all bots but wow, to see the effect. Why the social media sites cant do something like this I have no idea.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Probably inflates their numbers so they look better to advertisers.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Yeah google does not filter those bots. I remember when Apex was doing Google ads I saw the same IPs in there as I was seeing here - google is totally tracking all those bots as traffic and most google traffic, at least ours, was all bots

oh wow, i bet i can post x links now and do the webp pics now giggity

Weekend went by too fast. Next weekend I am going to try to do a nature thing - buddy of mine lives by the Colorado river and has some kayaks and invited me to do some kayaking from a place he knows to get on the river.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    That sounds like an adventure.
  • The Helper The Helper:
400 users all online all looking at latest content
  • The Helper The Helper:
I wonder how all these bots that sit on the lastest content page get passed anubis or maybe they did not but they are just registering on whos online
  • The Helper The Helper:
showing up on whos online not registration
  • Ghan Ghan:
The first gate is stopping all the bots that don't execute javascript.
  • Ghan Ghan:
That's the main thing with Anubis - no Javascript, no site. Typically you can still get the site to load without Javascript.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I remember the whole javascript thing, question - how many real people disable that?
  • The Helper The Helper:
Hell I guess I could go back on the stats to know that - we probably capture that and we know the before and after
  • Ghan Ghan:
Real users can't really disable Javascript anymore these days.
  • Ghan Ghan:
The internet is broken without it.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Bot readable, not human usable.
  • The Helper The Helper:
    got it
  • The Helper The Helper:
    Happy Thursday!
