It seems like everyone would like to believe they know what irony is, and consequently they use it incorrectly. Irony is simply a discordance with what someone says and does.
For example, a fire fighter who commits arson. That my friends, is irony. In some cases, a hypocrite might also commit irony.
"I am a protector of justice!" Says the man as he murders the innocent people.
If it is still a little complex for you, in layman's terms, it is something that in reality is the opposite of what it appears.
A person jumps into some steaming water thinking it is hot, only to realize it is in fact icy cold. Oh the irony!
The entire idea and meaning of irony can become very complex and used in many ways. Such as in Shakespeare's tragedies; he uses irony to convey the treacheries of misinformation and misunderstanding. Oh Romeo, you retarded fool. If only you weren't so busy being a conceited emo jackass you might have paid more attention to the situation and realized Juliet was not dead. That is irony. Ironic in that the entire situation in Romeo's perspective was Juliet was dead, and he had nothing left to live for, so he proceeded to stab himself in the heart; but Juliet was not dead and had Romeo waited a few minutes before killing himself or concluded that some ignorant girl he had known only a few weeks was nothing to kill himself over, then he would have discovered that Juliet was alive and they would have lived happily ever after.
huff huff
I hope that this has brought to light the meaning of irony to some of you.
