Artificial Intelligence MIT Warns That AI Can Now Credibly Complete Pretty Much Any Undergrad Assignment, Considers Overhaul of Entire Educational Model

MIT is mulling an overhaul of its entire educational system in response to the threat posed by powerful AI models — a striking response to the tech from one of the planet’s most visible and influential research universities.

In a new report published by the university’s ad hoc AI committee, which is co-chaired by professors Eric Klopfer and Samuel Madden, the educators describe the “profound challenges” that AI is already causing.

One of its most alarming conclusions: that AI is now able to credibly complete most undergraduate assignments.

AI “can produce credible solutions and provide reasonable responses to almost any written assignment in our undergraduate curriculum,” the report stated, “including essays, math and science problems, proofs, and coding assignments.”

For many educators, MIT’s declaration simply puts a rubber stamp on something that’s been clear for years now. The plague of AI-enabled cheating — with some students going as far as using AI to complete entire online courses for them — has caused a broader reckoning in how they approach giving instruction in the classroom.

Colleges don't grade on assignments anyway, so who cares? The exams need to be in-person, pencil and paper, no electronics in the room. That'll fix the problem real fast.
The prudent professor is already adjusting exams away from technical minutia and toward the deep conceptual understanding of the subject that is what will prepare students to success in a hybrid AI world. We already heard this for years with mathematics and calculators. The point isn't that you needed to know how to compute addition and subtraction quickly, the point was that you need to understand what addition and subtraction *are* and how they are used as the building blocks for higher level math that underpins so much of modern society.

The world is changing again. The best educational institutions will adapt and survive.
