Monitor flashing black

It started a few days ago. While I would work, my monitor would occasionally flash to a black screen, then go normal again. This happened for awhile, until eventually it got to the point where it would go black for a few minutes and only work for a fraction of a second. Rebooting didn't help. It's not the monitor, because the monitor worked fine when I plugged it into a different machine, and the working monitor from that machine stopped working when plugged into mine, so it's something wrong with the hard drive. Any idea what might cause this and how to fix it?

I don't know the specs, and I don't see how I can get them given the monitor, but it's a good 4-5 years old.
