The problem lies with the refresh rate problem in Windows XP (I don't think any other OS's)...
It MUST be set to 60 Hz -- so anyone who has fixed their refresh rates must at least set it back to 60 for this game. .. though note that the "NVRefresh Tool" will NOT work with the 30.82 drivers, so if you have those, you must use another tool.
Whichever tool you use, set the refresh rate back to 60 for AT LEAST 800x600 mode to get the game to start up, and if it still crashes once you enter the game itself (at, say, 1024x768), then you'll have to set the RR to 60 for that resolution as well.
You may get a headache if you play the game for too long on the low refresh rate -- but at least you'll get to play the game.
