I went to power on my computer in the morning and it turned on but the screen was black. I know its not the power supply, I was thinking motherboard or graphics card any ideas?

Does the computer actually turn on, or does nothing happen when you press the power button?

It's not that, as that wouldn't cause it to not even show the booting screens, that has nothing to do with what OS you're running.

Does your computer beep at all when you start it?
Does it do anything odd, other than the black screen?

It could be almost anything.. but as DDR said check if there are any beeps. Also check inside the computer to see if you can see any burn marks on any of your cards..

@ddrtits so your denying that a virus or something could have damaged his computers software related to booting up?

this may sound obvious but did you try more than once to boot it up?
try unplugging everything and replugging?

Yes, I am. Viruses can not make your monitor not boot up so you can't see it, they can however make your OS not boot. They can't do very much, hardware wise.

Try switching to another graphics card and see if the computer goes back to normal.

If not, plug in another monitor to see if the monitor turns on.

Check the video cable too.

I think your monitor's broken...Either that or it's just not plugged in well enough to the CPU. I have this problem sometimes. I usually solve it after turning it on and off repetitively with varying intervals between the on and off times.

Check the memory and the power supply. It's probably one of those.
