My computer taking up RAM why?

I have 256 Ram on my computer but when I started my computer and checked how much RAM i had it said I had 248 RAM why?
arent i suppost to have 256????????
why does my coputer take up RAM?

Sounds like you have cheap onboard video that is using 8MB for its own purposes

no i had a build in videocard but now i bought a Geforce 4 MX 420 64MB separate from my computer.

Is there an option in BIOS to disable the onbard VGA? If there is then disable it otherwise you are running dual video mode in your system.

What he means is that The guy that's asking the question asked why, when in the boot up screen, he only saw that amount of RAM when he certainly has more RAM. This is before he booted into Windows, and basically nothing is running so he should have full RAM right? He is not talking about RAM when Windows is running.

It sounds like you have a computer that uses shared memory for the video card. Even though you added a new video card you need to disable the other video card in your Bios. If it still takes up memory then you should post the type of system you have so we can do some research to find out what the problem might be. More than likely it is the old video card though.

this is how i setuped my memor

Installed Memory

Slot '0' has 64 MB
Slot '1' has 64 MB
Slot '2' has 128 MB

if u add it up, it adds up to 256 but it says 248 when i start my computer

Do you know how to get into the BIOS settings? Usually you push the 'delete' key while the computer is starting (during the memory test)... sometimes the magic key is ESC or CTRL-ALT-ESC or CTRL-ESC or F1 or F2

Look around in there for something like onboard video and disable it. It should do it automatically when another card is detected but check it anyway. You might have to look under all the different categories.
