How do I transfer my custom-made hero from one map to the next?

I understand you have to use game caches, but how do they work?

Help would be mucho appreciato.

you don't, just go to file at the top left of the unit editor, use Export All Object data or Export Unit Data and then open your other map and use Import ... data to load it

are you talking about from one map to another in the game or in the editor? there's a tutorial in the FAQ about game caches if your talking about in the game.
