network card help

My friend gave me some no name network card the other day without any drivers or anything, When I instal it in my old computer and go search for new hardware, Nothing comes up, but we know it works however as it was taken out of a computer that was later thrown away. I just need to know what generic drivers am I supose to use? If there is any information you would require that may be on the card do not hesitate to ask. I thank you in advance. I will be checking every hour or so to reply.

go to System Properties > Hardware tab > Device manager > look under your network adapter icon, what does it say if anything under there?

You could try going to microsoft windows update, because they scan your computer for needed driver updates, and since most companies send their driver updates to microsoft it should be under there. (heh, yah stupid me, lol)

Nothing is written there. I assumed I was gonna need to just put a generic one, but i cant find one. I cant quite go to the windows update threw that computer if I dont have the net to that computer so that wont work. Is there just a file that works for all network cards?

The best generic driver is the NE2000 driver which is on the Windows 9x CDs (classified under Novell.)

The two more common chipsets being used now are the 3com 3C90X and the Realtek 8139 so you could try those drivers too.

Key is to look at the card itself and see the manufacturer - then look for the little chip identifier - look at Rapmasters post - that is how you find about the card. I had the same damn problem and had to have my buddy point out those numbers I would not have found them without him - but trial and error on google.com works. If you find the right numbers you can enter that serial and it will bring up your card on Google.

if the OS does not detect new hardware it is prolly defective tho .
atleast when u did put it in and it did not detect anything new .

having the OS search for a new device results most of the times into a useless effort .

Hey. K i got some numbers. Here they are.

On the back of the card there is : UNI C1 94V-0 96 18
E119697

On the front it says made in china,

In the top corner in big letters it says CE
That`s pretty much it.

The NE2000 drivers should work-- in fact according to my quick research, it might be an NE2000 card.

Once again, what version of Windows are you using?

98 SE, I believe i did try the NE2000 allready but I shall try it again tomorrow morning. I will let you know how it went.

Well I tried that driver and also other NE one`s and none work. I dont know what to do anymore. Give up? Possibly, unless someone comes up with a good answer.

Does the card have one chip larger than the others on it? Do any of the chips have 8139 on them somewhere? It may be worth getting the Realtek 8139 driver and trying that to see if that makes it work since so many of the no name cards use this chipset recently. Do you have a digital camera that you could take pictures of the card with to post so that we may be able to help identify it?
