network connection wont work when firewall is on

i successfully setup a network connection between two machines both running XP. The problem is that the connection will only work when i set my firewall to allow all, which is basically disabling it. The firewall I use is Sygate Personal Firewall Pro 5.5. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get it working with the firewall remaining on?

Tell the firewall to allow traffic from the IP of the other system only.

yeah but we both needed net access, and if i did that, we couldnt access the net. And now that I turned the firewall off while networked and online, there is all kinds of .exe's trying to access the net and other wierd stuff

If you're not on dial-up, try getting a hardware firewall (linksys, netgear, etc). If you are on dial-up, then you may still look into a hardware way of sharing the connection (it'll be a bit more expensive though).
