non alphabetic hotkeys

Is this possible? Or are they all reverved for some reason. You cannot enter them in the object editor. I cut and pasted one in, it looked ok, but does not respond in game. Is this hardcoded not to work? Exactly how harhcoded? it would be really nice to have 1 2 3 and 4 be the four hero abilitys.... If this fails i can use qwert, even though im not using a qwerty keyboard

Digits are already used for unit groups...

The numbers are for unit groups, so it's probably extremely hardcoded into the game.

you CAN use the numpad numbers, i think... I'm thinking of dota. I hate those, though, because my laptop is not exactly conductive to a numpad, even though i DO have a numpad peripheral...which i have never used.

As mentioned earlier, you can additionally use the numpad numbers (sort of) because they correspond to items. If you want to have "real" items instead of dummy items so that you can use the numpad hotkeys, then I guess that won't work.

You're awesome for trying to find a way around using "qwert" as hotkeys... it annoys me alot when people use those because my keyboard doesn't go "qwert" it goes " ',.py ".

Well, it seems to me the idea was to use the regular numbers, not the numpad, which fails because the numbers are used to reference unit groups. Also, ring of protection doesn't really need a hotkey because its ability is passive. Items in your inventory have numpad hotkeys based on their positions, like this:

4 5
1 2

i know, but if in some mental world you sold rings of protection, there buying hotkey would be 2.. Oo and don't use num pad.. And the unit group is only set if you ctrl number it right?

Right, the numbers only reference unit groups if you set them, but they are reserved for the unit groups even if they aren't being used. That's why you can't use them as hotkeys (like the previous posts say).
I guess I just have to trust you on the ring of protection thing, though.

I think that its just that they cannot be used by custom functions. you know how you can press like alt+3+3+3+3 (on the num pad) and get a funky character? It seems there might be a way to do that, like when you prss 1 it thinks your pressing P, the real hotkey. I have no idea what im talking about (probably not feasible) Ill have a lok at that ring of prot thing.
