well here is an easy way to keep 60% or more of map hackers away from your map. You change the filename! Your map may be called Super Fighters, but the filename does not have to be Super Fighters it could be Twinkle. You remember that so when you want to edit you look for twinkle. But when they wanna edit they dont know so they look for a file called Super Fighters when a file named like that doesnt exist. Get it? Ok.

i just felt like sharing this lol

That's true, but if someone on bnet sees a game name "YOUR AWESOME GAME NAME," but then click on it and see "twinkle" they might not join.

It does. If you don't have the map downloaded, it shows the file name. Once you download it you see the name and minimap.

A host could cop it a lot if the name was DotA -apem!!! in the B.Net list and the file name was Twinkle

This wont work, all the person has to do it change how the files are aranged by the time they were modifyed, and anyone skilled enought to know how to fix a protected map will already know that.

Personally I think protecting a map is retarded unless you're trying to shield some game-breaking algorithm or secret from the general public, which can usually be solved anyways by making it from/into JASS. People will learn from your work, and few will copy it - but if they do, you should be flattered.

What stealer people are you talking about?

He said if they copyed your systems/triggers, not copyed your map.

It is a myth that there are hundreds of people out there waiting for some unexpecting map maker who didn't protect his map to host it and then steal it. Protecting or damageing your map file which is what protecting it actualy is can be undone and is not that hard to undo.

I don't know what makes people think that will happen but you are more likely to be hit by lightning. If you spent all that time on your map chances are you will have uploaded it, ether to this site or epicwar, which will retain your name. You guys are worryed about something that isn't going to happen, you keep saying protect, protect, protect but never give a good reason why to do it. If your scared some one is going to steal your map then don't host it, it is the only way to be 100% sure.

There are reasons to protect a map, but protecting it is useless cause the file can be fixed.

If your scared some one is going to steal your map, don't be, it is not going to happen.

I generally don't protect any map I make, and nobody steals them. However, I did protect my latest and most popular map, but simply because I don't want anyone cracking my save/load algorithm.

that is only partially true, you will never get the original triggers back. the regions and units preplaced will also have vanished. All those things, including the triggers will be put into a gigantic code blob which will also be the only trigger on the map.

There might be many people who know how to deprotect a map, but for every one of those, there are 20 that don't. Protecting your maps, at least in the early stages of its development, testing and hosting on b.net, prevents a ton of people from altering it slightly, and hosting it themselves, which results into tons of version, with each generation, becoming worse and more buggy. Just look at games like ENFO or Green TD, there are so many versions of these games, and 90% of them are totally unbalanced, and simply suck. If DotA wasnt protcted since IceFrog started working on it, it would never have been able to keep the high standards (you can say a lot about dota, but it certainly is very well made) up to the massive amount of people, that would try to alter it, to bring in their specific idea, or cheat or whatever.

How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
