I don't suppose anyone remembers, but I had been writing a novel for a while. I often posted snippets here on the forums every now and then. After about 75 pages however (about 50 pages of the novel itself, and the rest other documents I was going to put in later), I thoroughly went over my work and realized it was going in a direction I did not like. Not to mention the work was rather poor (to me). I decided to scrap it and start over, changing the setting a bit and cutting out a lot of extra stuff which might have just been distracting.

So far I have about 10 pages, and have been working about 3 days. I'm going to write a chapter devoted entirely to the setting, something I feel will be needed as it is set in the future and much needs to be explained. I have a basic outline for that chapter, and I'll post the finished thing... eventually. Anyway, here is the second chapter (You won't like the first because it is incongruent with the second and won't be until I get on with the book)

blarg. I don't know what sort of tag I might use to keep the format right, but seeing as I didn't skip lines between paragraphs, I'll just post a file

Also, I suck balls at dialogue. Hopefully it'll get better than this as it progresses.

Nice, :)
Wut is dis smoke?
I don't think I would've noticed anything about the dialogue, but now that you say that you suck at it, it makes my mind think the dialogue is kinda' awkward, :D
Interesting environment,

I like it a lot, this could end up really good.

I did notice some problems, mainly with switching tenses and a few awkward sentences. Overall, good stuff.

I just finished writing mine (in that neighboring thread) so I can give you some tips.

- think of the full story first, write later. This allows you to start writing with the moments you like the most. This is good, because they will be better that way when you take pleasure in their writing. I read somewhere that Goethe did it for Faust: seems to have worked. The problem is that if you do it all chronologically, you may slow down at a boring chapter and lose steam. I did it like that for the whole fanfic :D and it kinda sucked.
- try to have good descriptions. Descriptions and vivid language make the difference between "Lord of the Rings" and that WoW excuse for a book "Beyond the Dark Portal." Descriptions make ppl feel things when they read the text, so descriptions will make the readers come again at those special moments of the novel to re-live the event. Like when you (I, at least) re-read something from LotR.
- try to have fun with it. Don't fear writing down a paragraph or two when you feel like it, because I suppose this is the idea of capturing and riding the waves of one's creativity.
- try to be disciplined if the above thing doesn't work. I did one chapter a week at the end of last year. But you have to keep the other games and web pages on the browser off and away, since they spoil your concentration.
- re-read it at the end. I didn't do this because I was careful when writing the first draft, and I probably should go back and read through the damned thing again. But I probably won't, cause I'm too lazy for that.

And remember - the more you like the subject of the writing, the better it will turn up.

How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
