Nuon Preservation Project at Redump

Hey all,

I've recently become familiar with the Nuon system and I've got to say I'm intrigued!

I help out at an open disc-game preservation project redump.org and am seeing if any members here would like to help preserve the Nuon system. Scott from DragonShadow.com referred me to this forum for possible help.

Essentially what we do at redump is similar to no-intro and other groups, build a dat to help collectors collect. All discs are perfectly dumped with our dumping tool to ensure an accurate backup. This project requires anyone wanting to help out have original discs to ensure quality, not just disc images.

Leave a comment or shoot me a gmail at dizzzy7777 if you're interested in helping out. Not a ton of discs for this system so should be pretty easy, and may reveal some software variants of releases in the project.

Awesome!

Redump preservation project has almost 45,000 discs documented in their dat files, so there's an established process. Dumping from original discs are required to ensure quality control.
  1. Signup to the forum: http://forum.redump.org/topic/12228/want-to-register-please-read-first/
  2. Dump with our dumping guides (requires windows and a DVD disc drive): http://wiki.redump.org/index.php?title=DVD_Dumping_Guide_(Disc_Image_Creator)
  3. Submit dump info (detailed in the above dumping guide): http://forum.redump.org/forum/11/dumps/
Redump mods take the info submitted, check it over for QC, and put it into a dat. The site does not store roms, but Nuon could probably be safely uploaded to archive.org software preservation project for anyone who chooses to share their roms (this is entirely separate from redump, which does NOT host roms).

I am available for any questions! Redump is THE most well known and accurate disc preservation site, and I would LOVE to have Nuon preserved there :)

I have every ISO dumped except for Space Invaders XL and that elusive Crayon Shin Chan 3 so I'd be happy to help too.

I did a search on the site and was unable to find any NUON content. I did find a post on the forums that someone dumped all the retail games except for the Korean one but No love on the actual site.

Hi @The Helper , thanks for lettting me join the forum :) ! I wanted to include some additional information regarding the Redump project, with links to the different resources and what it is about.

First, the Redump Nuon discs with dump information is here: http://redump.org/discs/system/nuon/ This is the official information for everything that has been cataloged as officially dumped from a real CD/DVD for the Nuon. In the Status section it shows green if multiple people have dumped the disc and all submissions match, and blue if only one person has provided dump information. The whole purpose of Redump is to get multiple dumps of the same disc, by different people, therefore guaranteeing that the dumped ISO is actually a 1:1 copy of the original and that it was dumped correctly. In this case, the following discs would need a "redump" to confirm that the first original dump is accurate: Interactive Sampler Spring 2000, Iron Soldier 3, and Space Invaders XL. People redump all their discs, even if they have green status, as this has resulted in discovering new versions and revisions that end up being slightly different even if its the same game.

Next, they have a Wiki were they list the ISOs that even though someone has provided dump information for them, it is not available to the public. Here is the link: http://wiki.redump.org/index.php?title=VM_Labs_NUON_MIA In this case, only the Interactive Sampler Spring 2000 disc is listed, which means that the ISOs for the 7 officially released games are available to the public (usually in archive.org), and even though someone has provided the dump info for the Sampler disc, the ISO was never shared. The Redump site does not host or will point anyone to ISOs, Redump only asks dumpers to send the dump information. It is at the dumper's discretion if they want to later share the ISO publicly, and a lot of people do by uploading it to archive.org. I think it is nice when people share the ISOs as it serves for preservation purposes, as well as allows people to get to enjoy these discs many years later via emulation or directly on native hardware.

Here is the Redump Wiki page for everything Nuon that does NOT have any dump information: http://wiki.redump.org/index.php?title=Nuon_Discs_Missing As you may see, the Bust-A-Move-4 proto is known to exist, but has never been dumped to the Redump project or shared publicly (I did see the thread in here about this game, hope it can be shared someday). There is also no dump information nor publicly shared ISO for Crayon Shin-chan 3. There are a bunch of demos and variations of the Sampler DVD that have not been shared either, and NONE of the movies have been dumped either. I cannot edit that page, but I can see that the following are not included and should be listed in this page too (I could be missing others, using Nuon-Dome as reference):
  • Iron Soldier 3 Test Disc
  • Samsung Demo Disc Test Disc
  • Space Invaders XL Test Disc
  • Iron Soldier 3 "Demo"
  • The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension
  • Dr. Dolittle 2
I understand that according to NUON-Dome these are exact copies, byte for byte, of the released games (except the Samsung Demo Disc Test Disc), but only a redump would confirm it 100% if their hashes match, and the information would be cataloged along with the existing game in the DB.

Lastly, here is the link where you can find detailed instructions on how to properly dump and submit the information to Redump: http://wiki.redump.org/index.php?title=Disc_Dumping_Guide_(MPF) .

One more thing to add is that the Redump project is very strict in that anything that makes it to the DB has to be dumped from a physical disc. Lots of consoles, including Nuon, have homebrew games. However, they can only make it to Redump if the game was actually made available to the public via physical disc. I don't know of any specific Nuon homebrew games that were distributed individually, but I know that the PhillyClassic5 and the NUON Games + Demos discs have some of these homebrews. They were distributed in a physical disc, hence they are in the Redump MIA list.

Sorry for the wall of text, but hope this helps give more clarity on where to find the specific Nuon information for the project and get some folks here motivated to contribute. I believe this was what @dizzzy wanted to help out with when he started this thread 5 years ago, and it makes me happy that there is some renewed activity in the NUON community that could make this possible. :)

Thanks.
