Thousands of police officers have been laid off all across America since the current economic crisis began. Thousands more are getting ready to be laid off. So could we be on the verge of a new era of chaos and anarchy in America as crime runs wild and there are just far too few police to respond to it all? That is the message that one blood-smeared billboard in Stockton, California is trying to get across. Paid for by the Stockton, California police union, the message of the billboard is chillingly clear: "Welcome to the 2nd most dangerous city in California. Stop laying off cops." As state, city and local governments across the United States continue to be devastated by the ongoing economic crisis, budget cuts are becoming much deeper and police forces have suddenly become a very popular target.

Well, it turns out that Stockton has been considering a plan to lay off 53 police officers in an effort to eliminate a $23 million budget deficit.

In Oakland, California the battle over police layoffs has made national headlines over the past couple of weeks. Oakland has laid off 80 police officers, and now the police chief says that there are some crimes that his department simply will not be able to respond to.

In fact, Chief Anthony Batts has compiled a list of exactly 44 situations, including grand theft, burglary, car wrecks, identity theft and vandalism, that his officers will not be available to handle any longer.

They're so close to legalizing marijuana.... hopefully this will be the final push needed to get that done.

It would, at least over marijuana-related crimes. See, if MJ is legal, then the crime-rate will drop because using MJ would be legal.

Well, cops wouldn't have to spend their time looking for and ticketing/arresting people using marijuana. And the amount of revenue and saved money would hire many officers...

not to mention it'd get a LOT of inmates out of jail, and last statistic I heard said that it cost 30,000 a year to house one inmate, that'd save some costs too... but obviously marijuana is OMGEVIL and leads people to doing STUPID THINGS LIKE FIGHTS AND SEX, SPREADING STDS, in addition to destroying the liver, so it's clearly to bad to legalize... oh wait that's alcohol, which is legal, and more dangerous then marijuana

That's so easy to say, Just legalizing marijuana everything will turn out fine.
no crime and evryone would get a happy smile.

So what happens if another drug comes up? legalizing It to? It would be the same over again. again again......

Well, If the police were around ..the crime would be less and If they're smart, they could have a better check what they do with the money.

No, because most other drugs are without question harmful to the body or can make the user do crazy things. Marijuana doesn't distort the mind the way something like PCP or crack would. There is a clear and obvious difference between marijuana and other drugs.

>>Well, If the police were around ..the crime would be less and If they're smart, they could have a better check what they do with the money.

There's a shortage of money which means a shortage of police. 10 police can't do what 50 would... And they can't cover as much ground either which will easily lead to growth in gangs and sales of hard drugs etc.

"2nd most dangerous city" - which one is 1st?

Depends on what type of crime you're looking at. (Robbery, Auto-theft, Murder, Drug Dealing, etc.)

I know.. But they can always bring more police from other places to clean up!
Really, they should try and help each other out?

Seriously? Do you know how big California is? If they take police from somewhere else and put them in Oakland then the same thing will just happen elsewhere...

They could do that until they find a solution for the problem.
and I don't said they would be there everyday lol but they could help a little bit.
something then nothing at all.
and it seems the government give a crap, they could do something.
Now. I don't say anything about legalizing something. hmmm

I think the root of this problem (and many others) is simply over-population.

Then maybe some residents should just move somewhere where it's not so crowded.

It would simply over crowd the new place. You can spread the population, but it won't change anything. Also, it's not easy to simply move somewhere else. This places are where the low-middle class people are, and it's pretty low. Moving to somewhere new, they don't know about, is hard; finding a house, job, schools for kids, all of that. Also, sometimes they won't be recieved so nicely (discrimination, etc.)

There's not enough people on earth to crowd the entirety of Texas. There's plenty of free space everywhere on the planet.

Yes, moving can be difficult. But it certainly is better than becoming one of those ridiculously overpopulated Indian cities.

Well then the article would read "Texas's wildlife getting destroyed due to Californian immigration"

I still think my idea is the best. Don't forget about hemp and the amount of money/jobs that would bring! ;)

Philadelphia! At least, we have the most murders. We recently had a murder-free month. They celebrated by killing someone.

And population isn't solved by simply "Move to texas". There are a lot to consider. For example, an area that has a small population can't quickly adapt to such a big population. There would be home/job shortages, food too. Too much imbalance too quickly. Things happen gradually.
What we need is a bloody war, epidemic, etc. That's usually the quickest way (and suckiest too) to decrease population.
