onboard audio woes

Well, my friend just got his 830LR mobo (SiS735 chipset) and an AthlonXP 1600+. Here's the problem. The motherboard uses onboard audio, and whenever you load up a game, the sound lasts for a few seconds and then quits. In half-life it works forever, but in Deus Ex and Max Payne it gets cut off after 10-15 seconds. Also, after this happens, sound doesn't work at all.

If that wasn't enough, on a fresh boot flash apps don't have sound either. Which is really wierd, and debunks my theory that perhaps it was due to overheating.

I've installed the latest drivers for everything (including the sound of course). Any ideas?
 
I personally Hate Onboard Audio and Video.. never use them.. Always use add-in cards. not much help I know.. but Sound Cards are cheap now (relatively speaking) and would be an excellent remedy.
 
Have you tried upgrading the BIOS?
It would also be helpful to knwo the full system specs, including which onboard chip is being used.
