Welcome to Poetry Contest 9! :)

Topic:
Addiction. May it be you too a person or family member. Write a poem about somebody or yourself going through an Addiction, but at the end it's too late to save you/him/her.

Contest Rules:
  • You may submit any type of poem, so long as it relates to the topic stated above.
  • There is no maximum limit on how long the poem is. However, it must be at least 4 lines long.
  • The poem must be written by YOU. You cannot take another person's work or have anyone write it for you. Anyone caught violating this rule will be permanently banned from these contests.
  • Winners can not enter the next contest. They must either host and not judge, or host and judge. If they choose not to host, they cannot judge, either. This is to prevent people from winning over and over again.
  • Do not edit your poem after you've entered it. You have until the deadline to work on it, so if you feel you might not be completely satisfied with it, take your time. Once it's entered, if you edit your poem, you can and will be disqualified. We cannot take the risk of someone getting "inspired" by someone else's poem and basically copying them.

Judging:
Head Judge - Seth Cross
Judge #1 - Sixth House

Submitted poems will be judged using the following criteria:
  1. Clarity and Emotional Impact [40 points] - Is the meaning behind your poem clear? If you are describing something, does the poem paint a clear picture? Does your poem make us feel what it is intended to express?
  2. Grammar/Spelling [15 points] - Grammar and spelling should be taken care of without having to be told. Although poems can get away with certain grammatical infractions where prose cannot, if poor grammar obscures the ideas being expressed without reason, it makes it extremely hard to read. Poor spelling, of course, is unforgivable in this age of spellcheckers. This applies to 1337speak nad AOL tlak 2.
  3. Flow and Rhythm [25 Points] - Does your poem flow smoothly, or are there pauses and jolts, making it choppy and difficult to read? This is separate from rhyme - poems do not have to rhyme, nor will be they be penalized if they do not.
  4. Word Quality and Choice [20 points] - Does your poem have only basic vocabulary, or have you used a larger selection of words? On the other hand, have you used difficult or obscure words with no other reason than to confuse people or show off? If you use the same word several times when you could have switched it up, or if you use words so long and unwieldy that they break the flow of your poem, this is where you'll lose points.

Naturally, if you add up all the possible top scores in each category, you will get 100. Your score will, obviously, be X/100 for each judge. The three scores will be added and then divided by three (assuming that we still have three judges by the end), to get the average of the three scores. Highest score wins!

Deadline:
The deadline for Poetry Contest 9 is midnight, February 7th (GMT -5). Time zones do not matter.

The Rewards:
As always, like in the previous contests, winners are given a bunch of reputation from contestants and viewers alike. They can also be the hosts for the upcoming contest if they like.

Poetry Contest 5 was the first contest to use the Award system. With at least 10 contestants or more, awards can be given for 1st place, and 20 contestants for 2nd or 3rd place contestants. So, I'm hoping this time that there will be more entries, and we can give out the awards to the contestants!

Isn't that, umm, a bit specific? What if no one in your family has as drug addiction? Perhaps simplifying to just 'addiction'?

Perhaps it was. Changed it.

Because none of us are as cruel as all of us.
Well, in poems and almost any other literature, you don't have to specifically be the character/narrator or even involved in the piece. You can make it up, let your imagination flow.

Exactly my thought. I'll keep it as a drug addiction.

:( Fine.
It will now be an addiction of any kind.

Well now since people can feel more free about the topic, maybe more will join. Since now they can have all kinds of addictions. Yet they have to lead to death right? And how others tried to stop them?

Seb!

You can change this now in User CP.

I think it would be a lot better if it was just addiction. But really its sixth's call.

Yes, Yes! That's what I'm trying to aim for.

Yet they have to lead to death right? And how others tried to stop them?

Cause im all up in da hood,
Like you know I know I should.

Cause I got my crazy addiction,
And they aint be no restriction.

You cant stop me cause im on bean,
Yeah thats right mean with caffeine.

Thats right I got it in my hand,
And im bracing myself for off land.

And now it brings me speeed,
It satisfys my neeeed.

Yo I think I be done,
Its da end of my run.

And so derek wakes up,
With a mug in his hand,
Blood on his shirt,
A rubber duck in his pocket,
And handcuffs in the back of a police vehicle,
And he thinks to himself.
"What did I do foo?"
Daaammn, son... you needa step up yo' game, fo' real. That shit barely made any sense, didn't really hit the topic where it needed to be hit besides the addiction point, and your rap was... well, shitty.
Sorry it ain't constructive, but that poem warranted this comment.

It was a pretty restricted topic

Even though poetry really isn't my strongest side I'll give it a shot:p

"Cause and effect go hand in hand;
We’ve known it all along,
But did we mind?

And how I loathe what I have done;
A rock and a hard place,
Awaits me now…

Everyone’s talking about right and wrong,
Too forgetful to mention,
What they have done…

To say I’m different would be lies,
I can only close my eyes,
Pray nothing ever dies…"

Can't enter twice. C'mon, that should be a basic rule not needing to be written :)

For Jill

This sickness in my mind is really not there.
I suffer from myself, and I think it’s unfair.
My mind is a shade – a fragment of the past.
There’s no present, no future, no time that lasts.
I’m just there as I stay - waking aimlessly.
These moments that pass are my own task.

Lively flashes, beautiful women, dreadful lashes –
Broken glasses, somber lasted, funny jokes and songs –
Unfazed boys, girls with ploys, and vain love alludes.
Words fill the soul into a colorless mass.
They slip and shake and form into song.
But when words end and dance begins,
I am drunk and mad and glad again.

Once the rum is gone - the song is done.
My friends sing along to the last phrase I bring.
The hymn that rings out in a jubilant plea -
Is quite cruel and harsh and silly.
Boys chant out and girls shrill:
“Blame Jill. She’s freakin’ crazy.”
But there’s no Jill among the crowd.
She’s dead, you see – as dead as can be.

Frog blast the vent core!
Here is my entry:

There was music
There was colors
There was love
To live and let loose

Undercover agents
Clawing at my brains,
eating my soul
Like cold water on burnt skin,
I enjoyed every sensation

Back and forth,
again and again
Stop trying,
keep smoking,
keep breathing,
keep living in vividity

Death wandered
There were ants under my skin
Squirming,
itching,
biting
Tearing and pulling,
I ripped away my skin

Another puff,
another time
I can stop anytime
Just not now,
or any time soon

The walls were closing in
The floor was falling out
Shuddering,
they were watching me,
taping me,
waiting for me
The only way to cure it,
just another puff

The human condition,
laying in a pool of vomit
Smoke concealed the windows,
a stench hiding behind perfume

The maid arrives,
screaming,
moaning,
crying,
Another death,
another statistic,
another classic movie profile

Just another puff
Live and let loose
Enjoy every sensation

My entry ^_^
I hope you like it!

This is my story and entirely fiction.
This a story about a drug addiction.
About a man who sold his soul to weed,
Who consumed his plants and called it "to feed".

Because for him it was just more than fun,
To him it was the warmth of the sun.
But where it was dark there was also a light,
There was a girl who told him to fight.

To break the bonds and start anew,
And who said they could make it through.
But as time went by it only got worse,
As a victim of the addiction curse.

But the girl would never leave his side,
In hope to save and help and guide.
But there was nothing that could save,
The drug was his master and he was its slave.

In the end it was just too much,
He had fallen into his masters clutch.
The girl never said goodbye.
She never expected him to die.
