Poor Graphics performance

Hiya all ... since I was bored and looking for a new game, I decided to load up Red Faction again .. since i have changed some hardware/software since last time I played... I thought I would give it a go on my new improved system.

Much to my chagrin, the game played really sluggish. Slower that it did with my old setup.

that got me scratching my head .. so i thought I would run 3Dmark2001 on it .. just to see what I got... and here are the results...

Test 1 -
6725 3d marks (OUCH)
settings: 1024x768 - 32bit color
: No Anti Aliasing

Test 2 -
6527 3d Marks (MORE OUCH)
settings: 1024x768 - 32bit color
: Quincrux Anti Aliasing

Now ... here are my system specs :

AMD Athlon XP2100+ @ 1.74 GHz
1024 MB PC2700 DDR Ram @ 266mhz
GeForce 4 TI 4400 w/128 MB
Clock at 280
Mem Core at 570
Driver Version 40.72 Dets
Direct X 9.0
SB Audigy X-Gamer
Windows XP Pro - 5.1.2600 SP1

Now something tells me that with the hardware I got ... and even at the settings I used... that I should be getting much better performance thatn 6500 / 6700 3d marks.

So anyone out there who has a similar system .. and getting MUCH BETTER Results .. please lemme know... perhaps there are some settings I have overlooked or some tweakings that I need to be doing that I missed...

More detailed info can be Posted if needed... thanx

PS: Previous system was AMD Athlon 1.4 Ghz with 1024 PC133 and a GeForce 3 . getting close to 9700 3dMarks

If it makes you feel any better, my system only gets about 2000. And if it does make you feel any better, I will strip that happiness away by telling you that I am poor!

Sounds like you need a lot of tweaking. That computer should be hitting much higher scores than 6000. Moved to the tweakers forum.

Turned off V-Sync and everything I assume...

Did you change your motherboard and keep the same Windows? You always want to format when you change your motherboard. Check to see if there are tons of other programs running in the background... but even then I can't see what could possibly bring you down ~4k marks from what you should be getting...

Another thing to check is if the motherboard detects your processor at the correct speed.

Also running background tasks will give you a performance hit on the benchmark and in games

you should end task on any unneedded processes

Background Tasks are at a minimum, Fresh install of when changed MB, Bios and SMI board information all read speed of cpu correctly....

all uneccessary services are disabled, temp of CPU and Mainboard while tests were running were 57Degrees/32Degrees C (respectively)

nothing is overheating , only the Vid Card is overclocked... but not insanely so...

check "AGP" result in Orb...should display 4x, if it doesn't then look for a way to enable it (install 4-in-1 if VIA chipset will be a good start)

Did you benchmark before any overclocking or tweaking to get a baseline? If not, how do you know your changes didn't adversely affect an already working setup?

You don't mention your motherboard at all. Isn't the motherboard and BIOS kind of critical to the performance of the whole?

Ok Motherboard is a Gigabyte 7VRXP / f12 bios...
AGP is set at 4x
Ram is CAS 2

did a scandisk and defrag.. added a new exhaust fan .. so now CPU temp runs at about 47deg C under a full load ...

keep them idea's comin .. gonna try to reinstall DX9 tomorrow... see what happens.

Well,

Did yet another Reformat and a fresh install, used the redist of DX9, and disabled all extra services.

Ran another bench and clocked around 16000 so that is acceptable.. not sure what the problem was... but it seems to be working now

Also, in the last template there was a seperation between sticky threads and regular threads in the forum
  • Ghan Ghan:
Not sure. It's probably part of a cron job.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Hey Ghan, whatever cron job its part of its not running its been the same for days. If it does not work can we remove it?
  • The Helper The Helper:
    LOL! A tweak job!
  • The Helper The Helper:
this is the fix I get from that yeah this is hard to control. disabling bots is pretty much necessary as ai and other bots would push really old threads to the top. reduce weight of view count. disable guest view tracking if you really want to push active threads to the top. a bit of tinkering for a few days with the weights and other settings should get you a decent trending widget box.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I changed the settings a bit.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Narrowed it to 7 days for the half-life and set views to 0 weight.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I dont think Trending would work for this forum it would be better to just have the last 5 posts from anywhere
  • Ghan Ghan:
Probably will have to give it some time to update.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I'm guessing it is not retroactive.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Next on the punch list: Update the server to Ubuntu 24.04.

Mad Lads is new I see it displays original post date

One thing I have noticed and I dont know if it is by design but like 1 out of 3 times I come to the site the Anubis screen just hangs open, if I refresh it will go away but sometimes it hangs
  • Ghan Ghan:
    I've seen that as well.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Wow - the change in the stats are major. I kind of knew it was all bots but wow, to see the effect. Why the social media sites cant do something like this I have no idea.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Probably inflates their numbers so they look better to advertisers.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Yeah google does not filter those bots. I remember when Apex was doing Google ads I saw the same IPs in there as I was seeing here - google is totally tracking all those bots as traffic and most google traffic, at least ours, was all bots
  • The Helper The Helper:
oh wow, i bet i can post x links now and do the webp pics now giggity
