My current hard drive is old, and it likes to make a constant high pitch whine. For the most part is just annoying, but sometimes it gets really loud for a few seconds. I'm pretty sure its dying. Instead of copying the whole drive, I'm just going to treat this like a reformat.

Anyway, if I get a new drive, I need to do some planning first. I want to give XP (for which I have my installation disk) its own partition. I am also planning on a data partition, and a blank partition in case I ever need to upgrade to Vista and would rather work with Damn Small Linux.

I'm going to use an external hard drive for most of my data transfer needs.

I've already got all my personal files taken care of, what else do I need to consider/prepare?
