Hi all,
After experiencing endless crashes both in D2 (related to a Voodoo3 and a VIA motherboard) and in D2Exp, I think I might have solved it, at least for now. This worked for me, so I hope others who are experiencing random crashes in D2Exp might benefit from this. I read several threads on the Blizzard Open Technical Support Forum and then came up with this.
Select LOAD FAIL SAFE DEFAULTS from your BIOS and then turn the MUSIC in the game off completely. This has solved the problem for me as far as I can tell. You can leave the sound effects on, but turn the music off. I also installed DirectX 8, as recommended on the Blizzard Technical Support Forum, as it's required for the latest Blizzard patches.
Hope this helps someone!
