I'll start by saying I have an understanding with printers, I hate them and they hate me, always have always will.
OK, I bought a Xerox M940 Multifunction unit. It prints/scans/copies and faxes if you have a modem in your comp. The first week or so of college it was great, did everything it was supposed to do. Then I installed norton antivirus and had to format my computer (Norton is the devil) which required reinstalling my printer. Here's where the fun begins. My computer wouldn't boot if the printer was plugged in, but as soon as I unplugged the USB cable it's attached by, it boots fine. I called up Xerox tech support about this, and they didnt' know what to do. We eventually wound up reinstalling it with a minimal set of drivers, and it seemed to work fine. Thennit bugged out again and I uninstalled it. The printer itself went fine, but a program used to control scanning and faxing through it (Pagis Pro 3.0) decided it didn't want to uninstall. It would give me path not found and missing file errors, and only partially uninstalled. I now have a folder in my computer with no name that can't be moved or deleted, and windows has decided it's a system folder. It used to be where pagis was.
About 2 weeks after all this I had a paper due that I needed printed here because it was too early for public facilities and nobody I know was home, so I reinstalled my printer and it printed fine. But it won't scan (it does copy so I know it isn't broken) and I'm getting the thing where my computer locks up on booting. If the printer's USB cable isn't plugged in or I remove it, the comp boots normally with no apparent side effects. I just tried plugging it in while the comp was already running to try printing something thinking it should be Plug and Play compatible as almost all USB devices are. MS word found the printer and loaded it to the queue, but all the printer did was print out 8 lines of garbled DOS style ascii, and stop. I waited about 5 minutes and it didn't budge, so I tried cancelling the print job and closing the printer, no luck there. All that did was lock up the printer window. I unplugged the printer which wasn't responding to any buttons and an erorr popped up in Spool32 on my computer, which I've never heard of before.
I was wondering if anybody knew anything I could try short of a format and clean reinstall of everything to fix this problem. I'm gonna pick up a serial cable at the campus comp store tomorrow after class and try using that, the Xerox tech suggested I do that if anything else ever went wrong.

Heya Swilo

Which O.S. are you running? If you are running Win98, I know there is System Recovery installation on the disc. The newer versions of Windows might also have the same option. If you have a problem with Spool 32, it's referring to a Windows OS File (I believe)

xerox i am glad they are not producing printers for the home market anymore .

anyways .
drivers allways a problem with xerox they ship the weirdest drivers . trying getting the lastest ones .
serial is allways better then usb when it comes to printers least that is my expierence .

weird suggestion get the cartridges out and check if they are okay .
if possible clean the printhead .

the problems we had with xerox was beyond believe . and i know several customers who threw their xerox in the trash bin .

Chances are its yer USB drivers..

you need to make sure you motherboard has the latest chipset drivers loaded.. had a similar prob on a Via Board.. but soon as I loaded the latest 4-in-1 's boot up was a snap.. might want to look at that angle especially if you recenly did a reformat.

PS . Multifunction Units suck.. and Xerox more so than others...IMO

Definately gonna try the parallel cable (which for some reason I called serial) this afternoon when I get back from class. I'm running windows98SE, but I don't think a system restore will help this, as no files are missing or damaged. If that doesn't work, I'll try the chipset drivers, I'm running VIA 3-in-1 (?), at least that's what it says. I think that's ebcause my video card is PCI, would installing 4-in-1 hurt anything?

the 4 in 1 would not hurt anything.. it just wont install the agp files.

and yes.. if you have the ability to use the parralell cable instead of the USB I recomend that.

LPT is dedicated USB is a resource hog and somewhat flaky at best ( IMO)

Wow - the change in the stats are major. I kind of knew it was all bots but wow, to see the effect. Why the social media sites cant do something like this I have no idea.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Probably inflates their numbers so they look better to advertisers.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Yeah google does not filter those bots. I remember when Apex was doing Google ads I saw the same IPs in there as I was seeing here - google is totally tracking all those bots as traffic and most google traffic, at least ours, was all bots

oh wow, i bet i can post x links now and do the webp pics now giggity

Weekend went by too fast. Next weekend I am going to try to do a nature thing - buddy of mine lives by the Colorado river and has some kayaks and invited me to do some kayaking from a place he knows to get on the river.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    That sounds like an adventure.
  • The Helper The Helper:
400 users all online all looking at latest content
  • The Helper The Helper:
I wonder how all these bots that sit on the lastest content page get passed anubis or maybe they did not but they are just registering on whos online
  • The Helper The Helper:
showing up on whos online not registration
  • Ghan Ghan:
The first gate is stopping all the bots that don't execute javascript.
  • Ghan Ghan:
That's the main thing with Anubis - no Javascript, no site. Typically you can still get the site to load without Javascript.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I remember the whole javascript thing, question - how many real people disable that?
  • The Helper The Helper:
Hell I guess I could go back on the stats to know that - we probably capture that and we know the before and after
  • Ghan Ghan:
Real users can't really disable Javascript anymore these days.
  • Ghan Ghan:
The internet is broken without it.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Bot readable, not human usable.
  • The Helper The Helper:
    got it
  • The Helper The Helper:
    Happy Thursday!
