depends wat kind of lightning u want...u prolly can...do u want the doodad>cinematic lightning or like a big storm lightning...just a big flash in screen..?

perhaps monsoon? Only a larger area if that is at all possible?

you could run triggers to make the special effects for the lightning in the area of effect for the spell

i kinda wanted it to be like the way it happens in Starcraft.. the lightning appears above the target area and then damages them till the spell is off

so do a spell like firestorm, but remove the art
then, determine the area of effect and run a loop with a short wait period creating that special effect at a random angle, (random number between 0 and the AOE of the spell) away from the target of the spell
