Question 'bout Bnet Gateways

I was wondering if it is still possible to log into USWEST, stay connected, then just switch to USEAST. I know that you used to be able to do that. But now no other realms will ever appear when you try to change realm. Any info is welcome.

Under the current rules you can only change realms from the screen that asks you to select Single Player, Battlenet, or Other Multi Player, right under the battlenet button is the button to change realms.

what's the difference/point of switch realm to east when you are on west with out signing on from the first menu?

I don't think you can do that anymore. I remember being able to switch realms from the character selection menu a while back when the realms were connected togheter. Currently, the only possible way is from the main menu.
