Question: Does XP or 2000 have an alignment program.

Win98 had a program called winalign.exe or walign.exe--I has wondering if XP or 2000 had a program similar to this or do they need it.
Walign is used to align the code in exe's and dll's of certain programs to make them use less memory, load faster and sometimes cause a speed increase in the program.

So your saying that the disk defrag in XP, also does code aligning inside the dll's and exes like the program walign.exe did in win98.

I know that the defrag in 98 didn't do this.-One reason is the fact that aligning an exe changes its code. making it sometimes non-updatable--also violating the user agreement for some apps.
Walign was designed for Office7.0--but it could be used for other programs. I have successfully use it for Counter-Strike, getting a 20% performance increase on win98.
I was just wondering if there was a way to get the same results for XP, but I can't seem to find any articles about alignment in XP.

Ack I was talking windows 2000 - I don't know about XP. I never get anything new - I wait about 2 years. It kinda sucks for me though because I can never help with the latest OS but when I do decide to upgrade I usually have a smooth ride.

Be careful with winalign-- it can change the checksum of the files causing trouble like the "Unable to identify application version" error on battle.net (if you try to 'optimize' Starcraft)

Yes--it is called WMAlign.exe--it has to be used thru command prompt. I use this program because it backs up the files first, so if you run into probelms you can just paste the orginals back.

I figured blizz games would be a probelm. Since Halflife doesn't use a cd and doesn't do a version check--I though I give it a try.
Much to my surprise it worked. Its like CS on steriods,.

If 2000 has it, I would imagine XP does aswell.

Windows 2000 = Windows NT 5.0
Windows XP = Windows NT 5.1

In my early statement --I said it worked great with Halflife--except there is one file called--client.dll--located in the cstrike/cl-dlls folder. make a copy of this file. Its the client server checksum--after you align, paste the orginal back and you will have no probelms.
