General Reddit bans 'Fat People Hate' and other subreddits under new harassment rules

In the wake of a new anti-harassment policy, Reddit is banning a handful of its worst communities. "Our goal is to enable as many people as possible to have authentic conversations and share ideas and content on an open platform," a group administrator post reads. "We want as little involvement as possible in managing these interactions but will be involved when needed to protect privacy and free expression, and to prevent harassment."

The most prominent removal — or, as the admins say, the only subreddit with more than 5,000 subscribers — is r/fatpeoplehate, a forum devoted to posting (among other things) pictures of overweight people for ridicule. A follow-up comment lists the other four subreddits as r/hamplanethatred, r/transfags, r/neofag, and r/shitniggerssay; they've all indeed been shut down, all but one "for violating the Reddit rules to keep everyone safe." According to the admin, these last four ranged from 149 to 3071 subscribers, although in r/fatpeoplehate's case, "more than 5,000" is a bit of an understatement; the last Reddit metrics (and a Google cached page) put it at around 151,000 subscribers.

Reddit's policy, according to the admin, is based on specific instances of harassment rather than general offensiveness. "We will ban subreddits that allow their communities to use the subreddit as a platform to harass individuals when moderators don’t take action. We’re banning behavior, not ideas," reads the post. That means that some apparently more offensive subreddits have been left online. One of these is the intensely racist r/coontown, a fact several commenters brought up. "While we don't agree with the content of the subreddit, we don't have reports of it harassing individuals," an admin replied. Reached for comment, a Reddit spokesperson elaborated slightly. "All five [subreddits] had numerous complaints that they were harassing people both on and off Reddit," she said.

There are somewhere around 650,000 subreddits, so shutting down five may seem negligible. But it's the latest step in a long debate over how broad the massive site's content restrictions should be. Over the past several years, the generally anything-goes Reddit has slowly shifted these limits to exclude sexually suggestive pictures of minors, "creep shot" forums dedicated to surreptitiously capturing sexualized pictures of women, and a subreddit that was central to distributing leaked celebrity nudes last year. The site has had long-standing policies against spam, vote manipulation, and posting "personal information" like someone's address or employment information.

Selective censoring is pretty awful. As people have said over & over on Reddit, there are plenty of worse subreddits that would warrant being banned other than ones such as r/fatpeoplehate.

My roommate is outraged, as he was a frequent user of r/fatpeoplehate. Not because he hated fat people; no, he himself is a bit obese. He used to be much heavier than he is now, and has told me before all this nonsense that he partially draws support from the comments that were said in that subreddit.

That's interesting. So, he finds motivation in discrimination?
I'm not very fond of banning hate towards fat people, as fat is a state, like thin or small or tall. I don't get why people are offended, unless of course one would sprinkle some offensive terms together with fat.
BUT EVEN THEN, you don't have to feel offended, since we're talking about the internet; people enjoy being the person that they are or are not.

Besides, if you're looking into a tech forum for example, the only people you take seriously are the ones that shine through sheer knowledge or experience.

Motivation in discrimination is actually pretty powerful if used correctly. There are many people who used to be obese have gotten back to their healthier forms, all thanks to /r/fatpeoplehate.

Yeah, he gets a bit of motivation from it. He has really come a long way, prolly dropped something like 70 pounds, and has been exercising a ton (he ran a half marathon with me last November!). The only thing he really needs to work on is his diet but even that's gotten much better.

Definitely a valid point, but they need to worry about their bottom line. If a lot of fatties are being harassed in public so their pictures can be taken, then maybe some kind of class-action lawsuit thing could be coming their way. I'm no lawyer, but this is the U.S., so I can only imagine that people would at least give it a try. Reddit's probably just trying to nip this potential problem in the bud.

I find it hard to define what harassing is. Even in the US, in such cases it's word for word. I could call someone a dirty fucking cumbucket and deny the fact that I called someone names in court and sue back for putting me through the trouble of visiting court, unless I let myself get caught on audio.

@seph ir oth, it's nice to hear that. I respect people who reach goals on their own.

But that's a different kind of situation. We're not talking about the court case between the individuals, we're talking about a lawsuit against Reddit. That's their money on the line, and their reputation. I guess this is a blow to their reputation too, though, so maybe it's more the fear of getting legally involved, especially given the way the creator of Reddit went.

I guess if they add a warning and a clause in their policy that states that they do not want to selectively sensor due to the fact that they offer a much too wide spectrum of media for people to use, they'd cover up all legal issues.

Warnings and policy clauses like that are nice and all, but rarely effective in a legal setting. For instance, signs advising that you're doing something at your own risk have no legal ramifications when the person is injured and sues as a result. If the defending party knew the act was dangerous and didn't actively prevent others from taking part in it, they will certainly be held liable, sign or not. Even a signed waiver means jack shit if there aren't sufficient precautions made to lower the risk involved in a given situation. The sign would be more of a deterrent to complainers than anything else, and it certainly wouldn't be a catch-all solution to this problem.

Its funny that the german guy says they should just put a warning somewhere and everything is suddenly safe. German laws is like the most restrictive shit you can find on earth, its a wonder the german economy did not collapse under the weight of its own legal system yet.

Given that your legal system isn't as elaborate as ours, I thought it would suffice, but that's just beside the point. And so is your comment.

I understand. But why would porn sites go through the trouble of confirming you to be of legal age, if they don't want to secure themselves against lawsuits?

Many don't. The ones that do, do so to make themselves feel safer. Just perpetuating the illusion.

Edit: Also, Accname is from some obscure, non-American nation. For the record.

The confirmation is extremely practical; I doubt anyone under the age of 18 could figure out how to spoof it.

Good call. Fat people hate will have negative impact for those people. But don't worry, there's Thin People Hate.

You just can't win in this day and age, you know?

Anorexia is less funny than obesity though.

It doesn't matter in this day and age.
If you fight for it "you can win" Some people doesn't give up easily. You know?
But that doesn't mean discrimination is fair or right! You might as well discriminate against people that are too skinny, muscular.pretty... Etc

We do discriminate against all of those things and a few more. Not as publicly, because Beautiful People Hate comes off as a little more insecure, and typically beautiful people can do regular shit, like fit through doors and ride in a plane. Since when is it our job to make the world fucking fair or right? Welcome to reality - despite your kindergarten level of education where you learned everything has to be fair and equal, it doesn't and isn't. It would be nice, but there are bigger issues with equality than saying we can't laugh at the unhealthy for making themselves unhealthy.

How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
