This is stupid stuff but be careful about locking all your doors and windows before you leave your domicile. Thieves look for open stuff. They hate alarms and know alarms cant be set if windows or doors are open. They would rather come in through something that is left open then break in any day.

I foiled a burglary at my house yesterday. I could not help my neighbors but I left my bathroom window badly closed and they came through that window the same time I was walking my dog and I met the 2 guys that were going to rob my house at my door (8:00 AM I was just done posting some news). They did not get past me and it was awkward confronting two big black guys that were expecting to walk in my house. My Cocker Spaniel and I scared those guys away and the little dude who was crawling thru my window got out fast.

They robbed like 5 people in the complex that day. They came in through unlocked windows or doors. Lock your stuff people. Luckily I work at home but I almost had the home invasion nightmare and someone could have got hurt. (not me)

Those guys were not expecting me there and were not crackheads or punks, they did not want trouble. They were movers for the careless.

LOLLLL

And yea, I always lock my door but usually leave my window open since my street is busy enough for a robber not to be climbing up my fire escape. And all the other windows are facing a courtyard where garbage is sorted and has no way up. :D

Correct me if i'm wrong but robbers always find a way to climb it up, either with luck or skills, they always manage to get their job done!

My Cocker Spaniel and I scared those guys away

Who were they more afraid of? :D

I don't think we have many break-ins around our neighborhood, there is a church about 2 blocks away for starters (Perhaps it doesn't help much with security, but... c'mon!). We have 5 ways to get into the house, well, 6 if you take the time to kick open the new garage door, and a few others if you'd care to break the window.

Front door, door to the garage, sliding glass doors in the back, and a door to the laundry room. 99% of the time the front door is locked (Ironically, coming home from school it was unlocked today), but I keep a key, and no it isn't in a hide-a-key rock. If people wanted to break into our house we couldn't really stop them, because our dog, while not a cocker spaniel that scares off burgalers, is pretty friendly and will give you a sniff-over for about 10 seconds if she doesn't know you and you come in anyways; she can usually guess if someone is a family member or a UPS guy when they enter through the gate (She does, however, have difficulty picking out her family members while she's left in the car as we shop; any woman walking by could be her owner, for all she knows)

There is one 80% foolproof way to get in, which involves going through the doggie door (Sooner or later I will get too big to fit through the thing, however). I've encountered complications with it, since we were building a new fence and had to create a pen for the dog so she wouldn't start pooping in our 90-year old neighbor's yard. So I couldn't reach the dog door; I've had to jump the fence twice. Now the fence is complete and the pen is down. I still barely fit through the dog door; it's fortunate I have a key anyways! :D

Our house is ussually secure. Most of the time, every single door is locked. Front, back, garage, and the door TO the garage.

Even if they did manage to somehow unlock the door, we have an alarm on while we sleep, so we're in no trouble there.

Plus, a fence surrounds about 50% of my house's perimeter. In the fence is my half-dog half-wolf, and he tends to act a bit agressive to those he doesn't know - mainly when they attack him or someone he knows.

So I think I'm pretty secure.

At least you were pretty lucky TheHelper.

Does your alarm use the phone line?

Like that has anything to do with it. I have a church of Scientology right around the corner from me and that did not help. God helps those who protect themselves. Keep those doors and windows secure my friends.

Get back on topic please.

But yes this is true. My mum's house is one of those that cuts off a long driveway so it becomes a hotspot for burglars. We had our 360 stolen once (lucky the guy got busted, I also knew him and hated him). And also, more recently another guy or two, walked in and stripped my mum and step dad's wallets of everything and took off (haven't been caught afaik, they also tried all the cards but failed, thankfully).

Everyone elses robbery stories are way more exciting. Things actually happened.

In mine, all that happens was my video camera turned on and recorded someone trying to open my window, which is stupid because I'm on like the seventh floor.

Wut? Scientology is not a religion?

I don't know. Don't they worship aliens that tried to kill the souls that became humans by dropping them into the volcanoes at Hawaii out of golden Boeing 747's without the jet engines? They don't seem like entities that would watch over my house.

Hey...

It's not officially a religion. I'm a human whose beliefs are about technology and science. Mixing that up with Scientology gets people to see me as "estrange".

My area's not too bad, but my sister's bike got taken a few weeks ago and we haven't seen it since; it was left in our back garden which is not visible from the main road or the side road that runs on the other side of our neighbour's house.
It was quite well hidden (though not chained up) so we think that it was someone local.

Strangely, my ancient bike was just 2 metres away and they didn't take that, though it has been left out so long that it is a somewhat permanent feature of our garden (plants have grown around it ).

Wouldn't be the first time some kids have tried taking something from the back; a few years ago three or four of them (about 10-11 years old) tried taking a knackered old pedal go-kart, while we were sitting in the dining room, watching them! So I walked round the back, down the side street, and to the snicket on the end (which is a private road) which they used to get there. I was a very hairy person back then I will admit and they crapped themselves before they fled.

We have an alarm but don't use it (the cat would set it off); it's a reasonably safe area (though cars are somewhat easier targets; we've one broken into before but they didn't take anything).

I haven't heard of any house robberies in my area, at all. Maybe it's because the majority of the windows are all barred lol.

I think the kid always messing around in the yard with a blow-torch scares the robbers off my house.

How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
