Rereading Harry Potter

I realized last night as I slipped into a seat with popcorn and some of my best friends in the seats next to me, that I was about to witness something very strange. That is to say, I was about to watch a movie, that was part of a series I had been watching since I was about six years old. Needless to say, I was watching the new Harry Potter and the Deathy Hallows (Part I). It was very good, but it occurred to me while watching them appirate into thin air with crazy molding effects and as a gust of fire came out of Hagrid's motorcyclle, none of this happened when I was six. The film industry and all of technology has changed tremendously since that first Harry Potter. I read all the books when they first were coming out, and I must say, I am going to try to reread them all now. They are probably one of, if not the best, fantasy series in the world.

I hope other people feel the same way, and reread them, just, well, because.

As much as I'd like to reread them (not sure why, but they always felt like such good go-to books to read, compared to most other stuff I have hanging around), I'd have to find them - they're strewn all over and I don't think I'd have time to read them anyway :( Haven't seen any of the movies since I got The Chamber of Secrets on DVD for Christmas a few years back, sadly.

(Is the movie good, btw?)

I am seriously going to miss Quidditch. No lie, that was my favorite part of the HP movies... When I purchased the newer Lego HP Years 1-4 for the 360, I was psyched at the idea of playing Quidditch...

Sadly, no Quidditch.

It's a game I wish was real. Hell, I'd go to the World Cup every year.

Second that. One of the main reasons why Harry Potter 1 and 2 are my favorites is because they had Quidditch. Back when Harry Potter was simple - a simple story about a boy at school, :) I liked it back then. Not that the rest is bad, ha. Just that the good times were my favorites.

Surprising that this is the first time I've seen the thread, about 5 minutes after watching the first movie for the first time. I haven't read the books yet, either. :p

I guess I'll be watching/reading for the first time, along with you guys.

I never understood what the point of all the other balls in Quidditch were, if whoever caught the Golden Snitch won the game anyway.

I haven't read any of the books, so perhaps there's some explanation there (does anybody recommend reading them by the way?).

My girlfriend said that the Golden Snitch is worth 150 points, and the regular one (?) is worth 10 points. Catching the Golden Snitch ENDS the game, so I guess whoever is winning at that point is the winner.

Not true. In book 4, they go to the World Cup where a Seeker catches the Snitch when they were so far behind, the 150 points did not give them the win. The catching Seeker lost the game. But he lost on "his terms" was the idea.

As for the PC game; I have a netbook. No games!

The Bludgers do not give points. They beat the crap out of anyone unless the Beaters keep them away. The Beaters also smack the Bludgers at the opposing team to throw them off balance.

As for the Chasers and the Keeper, I think that's just to give the crowd something to cheer about until a Seeker finally gets the Snitch. That, and the Snitch is hard to catch... Meaning it might take some time. You don't want people to just stare at that until the game's over...

Ahh, thanks for clearing that up. I'm pretty sure one of the films actually explicitly states that whoever catches it, wins. :p

Why would you want to catch the snitch if you know it's going to lose you the game then? Quidditch is flawed. :(

The Seeker knew his team wasn't going to win. He knew his Chasers couldn't beat the other teams. So instead of letting the game go on and the score get worse, he ended it quickly because at least he can say THEY ended the game, not the opponents. It's a pride thing.

As for the Snitch, it's said that whoever catches it wins the game because 99% of the time, that is the case. 99% of the time, if you catch the Snitch, the 150 points make sure you win. But 1% of the time, it won't be enough.

I knows my Quidditch :shades:

Yeah, our school tried to play some Quidditch for gym. Didn't turn out too well, neighboring schools/people thought we were strange/nerds. Ha. Was fun, just not... normal. :)

I was reading up on my favorite HP sport :)

Supposedly, the standings work from how many points you accumulate. Not so much who wins. So if your Chasers suck and you're the Seeker, you still want to catch the Snitch as soon as possible because if you've been getting lots of points throughout the season, you can still be the champion?

Wait, you are actaully not joking ? :D

Sounds nice, yet i wouldn't participate. I enjoy watching almost any type of sports, but the only ones I do participate in are marshal arts. (hope I spelled that correctly)

Martial. Martial arts.

So, I actually started re-reading the series. There was a huge amount of nostolgia when I picked it up and remembered being in Elementary School, going to a book fair with a good $50 and picking up the Sorcerer's Stone and the Prisoner of Azkaban [yes, I originally bought them out of order. I did not realize that Chamber of Secrets was between the two at the time, this was the first time I had ever heard of Harry Potter]

Then I remember in High School, being lent book... 4 or 5 by a friend and returning it the next day, having read the entire thing. I remember his shock that I was already done, as whichever book it was, it was either the largest out of the entire series, or second largest [at that time, of course]

I'm remembering all the things the movies left out. For mention;

I missed Peeves. He isn't in any of the movies and I'm bloody depressed about it. He was a fantastically hilarious character. Quite possibly my favorite out of the entire book.

It's also funny to see the similar speeches and lines that the movies got EXACTLY right.

Ah, Harry Potter... How I missed thee...

How old were you that your mother read it to you? I mean, not that I can talk; Like I said, I think I started in Elementary School, and I'm 22.

I wonder, anyone seen any good HP fanfiction? I cannot let the HP goodness end!!!

I ordered like five blocks for 15 dollars. They're just little aluminum blocks with holes drilled into them
  • Varine Varine:
They are pretty much disposable. I have shitty nozzles though, and I don't think these were designed for how hot I've run them
  • Varine Varine:
I tried to extract it but the thing is pretty stuck. Idk what else I can use this for
  • Varine Varine:
I'll throw it into my scrap stuff box, I'm sure can be used for something
  • Varine Varine:
I have spare parts for like, everything BUT that block lol. Oh well, I'll print this shit next week I guess. Hopefully it fits
  • Varine Varine:
I see that, despite your insistence to the contrary, we are becoming a recipe website
  • Varine Varine:
    Which is unique I guess.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Actually I was just playing with having some kind of mention of the food forum and recipes on the main page to test and see if it would engage some of those people to post something. It is just weird to get so much traffic and no engagement
  • The Helper The Helper:
So what it really is me trying to implement some kind of better site navigation not change the whole theme of the site
  • Varine Varine:
How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air
