Heh, they are not telling you the real truth about how hard this is.
-Get GMAX.
-Create you model, or import one and alter it.
-MDX importer script from WC3Campaigns.com forums
-Then create a skin.
-Then import that, and adjust each vertex of the model to map to the skin (UVW Unwrapping).
-Export to MDL using Dex script, also from WC3Campaigns forums. Copy to a text file.
-Manuall edit the MDL and add in your own materials and skin.
-Open with Warcraft 3 File Converter, by Yogbul (or w/e).
Then import into world editor.
You have no idea how long that sheild took to make.
I have two major cad platforms here at work, I have been doing modelling for 8 years now, and heres my final opinion.
GMAX interface is hard to use; its functionality is poor; Its menu's are confusing, the help is not very usefull, and you have to figure out 90% of it on your own.
- MDX Import doesn't do animations, even though it says it does.
- MDX import brings in the texture map, but doesn't save it. Even altering a small existing model, you have to totally retexture it.
- MDX Export doesn't do textures and materials, you have to learn to do them by hand (3 hours to make mine work with team colros.)
- The people who wrote the import / exports are no longer around for support, or updates.
- GMAX doesn't do any major formats, VRML, X_T, SAT, ACIS, etcetera. It does one foreign format.... and odly, thats not 3DS max.
