CATASTROPHIC predictions of global warming usually conjure with the notion of a tipping point, a point of no return.

Last Monday - on ABC Radio National, of all places - there was a tipping point of a different kind in the debate on climate change. It was a remarkable interview involving the co-host of Counterpoint, Michael Duffy and Jennifer Marohasy, a biologist and senior fellow of Melbourne-based think tank the Institute of Public Affairs. Anyone in public life who takes a position on the greenhouse gas hypothesis will ignore it at their peril.

Duffy asked Marohasy: "Is the Earth still warming?"

She replied: "No, actually, there has been cooling, if you take 1998 as your point of reference. If you take 2002 as your point of reference, then temperatures have plateaued. This is certainly not what you'd expect if carbon dioxide is driving temperature because carbon dioxide levels have been increasing but temperatures have actually been coming down over the last 10 years."

Why the author of the article deemed this to be a "tipping point" I don't know, but it sure isn't surprising that the scientist in question is the head of a right-wing think tank which receives funding from oil, tobacco and logging companies.

So is the earth still warming? Not in the last decade, but lets try to put that into perspective:

Yes, interesting that he isn't really a scientist. More of a fascist conservative Neo-Con. Why don't these people want to admit that the global warming "debate" ended long ago.

Looking at a 10 year model for the basis of a world wide event isnt a great point, but then again that graph is also a terrible discussion point.

Go back over 1000 years and talk about tempuratures. Look for reasons things happen, bring science back into the discussion. We dont know, nor can we fully grasp the complexities of the system of our planet. If carbon footprint and the amount of carbon in the atmosphere was the only factor then we would already be in the worst case scenario. We are obviously not there.

I want to see a TRUE discussion on global warming. Everyone acts like the talking point of global warming being a misconception is like cursing god and abbrocating slavery. It should be a scientific discussion with a continuous revisit. Right now its just another industry like Big Oil and the truth is buried under money and corruption just like Big Oil.

i'm not too afraid of the whole global warming thing. It's the planet's way of hitting the reset button. it's a cycle she will repeat for as long as she lives, Global Warming is inevitable, the only role we have in it is that we can either speed it up, or stall it for a bit.

in the end thou when the ice caps melt and the planet freezes over and essentially "resets" things will grow back better in the end. a good way to look at it is like a forest fire...

for years we thought forest fires were bad that they destroyed natural habitats and caused harm, we tried to prevent them and what happens? they come back even stronger, then we realized that the forest actually DO need these fires. it elements the dead foliage and helps bring new nutrients to new plants. a forest fire every now and then also helps prevent a massive buildup of brush that would result in an even bigger fire. and if you don't believe me just scorch your yard every now and then you'd be amazed at how the grass looks when it grows back.

Actually, if you go back 1000 years, you're probably going to see the same big asymptotic curve, just smoother. We've been heating up since the neolithic revolution which started civilization...actually, that's mostly likely the big reason the neolithic revolution happened.

You have to go back several hundred thousand years to get a good picture of whats going on. Several studies have had results showing a spike in temp every (roughly) 100,000 years or so. We've been on the increase toward our current spike for about 10,000 years, and, assuming we're repeating the same old pattern, will reach the top soon before spiraling back down into 80,000 years of nice temp and ice ages. Judging by the graphs this spike appears to be a totally natural process. Whether or not scientists are right in suggesting that we are in fact making this temp spike worse is yet to be seen, as is more or less the big debate right now. Whether or not Earth is heating up is obvious; the real questions are, what are the causes, what could be done to help, what will be the effects, and what can be done about those.

Damnit, someone made a coherent, cogent post. Who let this happen?
