Screen problems

2 out of 3 times when I try to open a program such as Diablo II, the screen goes to 640x480 and has very limited colour, most likely 256, the program doesn't run, and the mouse freezes, and I have to reset the computer. What is going wrong and how do I fix it? All help is appreciated.
 
Make sure you have the latest driver updates for your video card. Make sure that in your Control Panel Display Properties that you have the proper monitor type set.

Many of Blizzard's games only run in 640x480 and 256 colors - I believe this is true up to Diablo II but the XPac allows for more. If you have a problem when the games switch to this resolution and color depth you can usually fix it by manually switching to 640c480 and 256 colors before playing the game.
 
I do have the expansion. I will check the Video Driver and Monitor settings and such. This problem only begand occuring recently, and beforehand everything ran fine.
