Speed up your 'net connection! (Win XP)

If you are running Windows XP, the follow steps will allow you to speed up your connection by 20%!


It's not common knowledge that Microsoft HOGS your bandwidth. There's a setting in Windows XP that tells it to reserve 20% of your bandwidth, basically, you never see it. Here's the steps to set that number to 0.

Start/Run
type "gpedit.msc" (don't include the quotes)

Now follow the "tree" down.............

Local Computer Policy
---Computer Configuration
------Administrative Templates
------------Network

Once you have the Network listing open, you will see a QoS Packet Scheduler. Click on that and on the right you'll get a list of options.

Limit Reservable Bandwidth is the one that you want. Click on it (open it up so you can see the properties), Enable it and set it to 0.

This should do it for ya. I didn't do before and after tests, but was surprised to see that if you never touch this setting, it will default to 20% *Yuk*

That's not really true

The QoS "feature" does nothing unless you are on a network that supports it (I don't know of any ISPs that do) and use applications that support it

although disabling it is still ok because it presumably does take a little of CPU time and memory..... and it is useless

Well, off I go I guess ... =) I turned it off anyway to free up resources, no matter how small they are.
