The cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants is in hot water from a study suggesting that watching just nine minutes of that program can cause short-term attention and learning problems in 4-year-olds.

The problems were seen in a study of 60 children randomly assigned to either watch "SpongeBob," or the slower-paced PBS cartoon "Caillou" or assigned to draw pictures. Immediately after these nine-minute assignments, the kids took mental function tests; those who had watched "SpongeBob" did measurably worse than the others.

Previous research has linked TV-watching with long-term attention problems in children, but the new study suggests more immediate problems can occur after very little exposure - results that parents of young kids should be alert to, the study authors said.

Kids' cartoon shows typically feature about 22 minutes of action, so watching a full program "could be more detrimental," the researchers speculated, But they said more evidence is needed to confirm that.

It's the kids that have attention problems.

Spongebob is too awesome and funny for it to cause ADHS.

Maybe instead of saying that everyone that doesn't fit into their psychological niche has a problem they could do research into why it is many of those problem kids do noticeably better in various subjects, and it seems to me that their results have a very minimal difference. Last time I went to a psychologist, I was diagnosed as 100% likely to have schizophrenia (I assure you I do not), so I may be somewhat biased to disagree with anything they say, however it seems to me the tests are usually extremely stupid. And WTF is this Caillou show? What happened to the good old shows like Doug and Angry Beavers?

On a side note, did the kids who watched Rocko's Modern Life do any better?

I've watched from 4 years old cartoons, almost the whole program (3 hours) without any consequences.
And I am sure almost all of us don't have these kind of problems.

However, the study did point out how my little brother wasn't able to calm down and have learning issues. He's been watching a lot of Spongebob Squarepants.

That show is pretty entertaining, but it is pretty damn goofy. When I was a kid I watched Cartoon Network: Samurai Jack, Courage, Edd'Ed'n'Eddy and all that classic stuff.. Also there was this show Time Squad that actually thought me a good bunch of basic history, at least for a kid.

Don't forget Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny and Looney Tunes, Tiny Toons, The Flintstones, some Boomerang classics, Pink Panther, Toonami, Pokemon the first and second seasons, etc.

One time I blew pepper into my friends eyes as a goof because I had seen it on those old school cartoons. Did not make him sneeze though. More like hit the ground crying and screaming for like 10 or 15 minutes. He had contacts in and it got all in his eyes and it was horrible. The funny thing though I was like 23 years old when I did it :)

There's just too much awesomness from the old Cartoon Network, I can't mention it all.

Except Pokemon. Even when I was 4 I thought that was hell'a dumb.

When I was a kid I snorted pepper for some reason all the time... can I attribute this to cartoons?

How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
