StarCraft and Windows Xp

My brother recently got a new compter with Windows XP. I was going to load Starsraft, but instead of the normal install menu popping up for auto run it brought up an error message.
The title bar said "Install". At the bottem it had OK and Cancel buttons. The rest looked about like this:

This application has encountered a critical error:

Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Program: F:\install.exe
File: F:\install.exe

Press OK to terminate the application.

I was hopping some one could tell me what this means and how to fix it. If you require more specific information (processor, memory, and so on) tell me and I'll supply you with it.

One time i did get in to the normal menu (don't know how I did, it just popped up, maybe i was pushing a botton or something) and began istalling it but after it got done with StarCraft.dat or something like that it would stop. It didn't freeze but just stoped. I tried that a few time and gave up because i had to go. So please, if any one has seen this or knows what to do I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks. Kro.

I suggest you visit the Windows Update Site. It has many updates for Windows including compatibility updates which will probably solve it your incompatility problems.

Feel free to post back if it still fails.

Nota

Nope, I downloaded the 3 critical ones I needed and some other recommened ones, but the same error came up again. Thanks any way. Kro

Starcraft Installing Errors

Your CD might be corrupted. Try the following :

Copy the "Install.exe" file from your Starcraft CD-Rom to your hard-disk and run it from there.

Won't let me

I went to copy it, and when it was at about 99% or done it brought an error message up stating:

Cannot copy INSTALL: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Since nothing on this StarCraft CD seems to be working, does any one think buying a new StarCraft CD would work?
Kro. Thanks.

What is your CD-Rom's full name ?
Do you have access to another computer you could test your CD on ?

Yes, there are other computers, actually two. Both have Wndows 98. Last time I tryed using the CD on them it worked fine. When you say the the "CD-Rom's full name" do you mean like the CD Drive (F:)? Sorry if i have this wrong or don't understand. The CD Drive (F:) is what its called when i go into My Compter. Another thing the name might be, if I have it wrong in the try, is PHILIPS CDD4851 CD-R/RW. I'll make sure the CD works on computer I have acsses to at the moment and reply soon. Thanks, Kro.

I just tried it on the other computer and it worked fine. I went in and started a game just to be sure. Oh, sorry about the simily faces in the previous reply. They are suppose to be : ) without the space between.

I think the operating system is AMD Athlon XP Processor Model 1500-1.33GHz. I hope this is right. Kro.

The operating system is Windows XP (nonamerequred didn't read the title of this thread :))

I see now. Thanks for telling me what the operating system is. ;)
I now feel stupid because I didn't already know what the operating system was, oh well. :p

Nothing wrong

If you think there is somthing wrong between starcraft cd and Xp there isn't I have xp,starcraft, and starcraft Brood War there is just som thing wrong with the computer or the cd

Yeah, your probably right, but I didn't know when I first posted this. Thanks. Kro.:)

Guess I got off the train there... I'm not sure about this, but maybe a firmware update would do the trick ? I'll wait for another point of view. I have no idea how to install them.

No problem. Whats a firmware? And if it is my problem does any one out know where or how I could update this. Thanks for all the help NoNameRequired. ;) . Kro.

My pleasure to help you out.

From what I read, a firmware update is used for updating your BIOS control over your CD-Rom. A regular here mentioned this can fix a lot of problems, including Diablo read errors. In your case it would be with Starcraft.

Let me ask you, have you updated your BIOS lately ? We should look into that.

It might also be possible your CD-Rom is not connected correctly. I suggest you shut down your computer, open it up and check the CD-Rom's connection. Make sure pins are not bent or the wire is not broken. Check the jumper settings. They should be like the following.

10-069-1.gif

Jumpers Function

off off on Master (default, as shown on picture)

on off off Cable Select

off on off Slave

If all the connections are in order, would it be possible to test you game using another CD-Rom on your current computer ? Or, take your current Philips CD-Rom an insert it in another computer.

Last hunch, have you downloaded the burning issues fix on the Windows Update Site ? By searching, I noticed you that Philips is a CD Burner. Am I correct ?

To begin, no I don't think I have updated my BIOS. Once again I fail to grasp what something is, this time it would be a BIOS. Second, I will have to ask my brother to see about the connections of the CD-Rom or to insert it into another computer. This might take me a while. Next, about the updated to buring issues fix, I did download some updates but I'm not sure about that one. Last, you are correct when you say the PHILLIPS is a CD burner. I'll get back as soon as I can with every thing. Thank You. Kro.

I did do a rare thing for me and hire a girl last month without warning. Everyone was made at me because I started her at like 21, but she worked with me before and I was like don't care. She made 19 at her old job and I wanted her to come work with me, she is the best

I'm going to get her a raise at the end of the summer. She wants to go to school again, but I want her to still work with me so.... she kind of can just tell me what the price is. I can go to 25 if she keeps up. I need to get her onto line more, that's what she wants, but I need her where she is and it's not fair that she doesn't get the little bit of raise that comes with it. She can do it no problem, I've worked with her there.

It's just hard to move and train people unnecessarily right now. And also the line fucking sucks, it's not any more fun. This is turn and burn so I have the bankroll, and everyone suffers for it

I think it's gonna be a good fall and winter though. We're going to have a good staff, they will get along, they will be able to manage the workload and the complications, they know how to really cook this year, like every person on line knows their steak temps. Some of them use thermometers a lot and they don't always use them right, but they do know how to do it. Failure, especially in this field, is the only way to get better. They'll get it
  • Varine Varine:
They won't get feel down while they do the thermometer, but we didn't have an instant read probe when I was learning. Like they did but god knows how off it is, you HAD to do it by feel. Even if the chef was fine with me bringing my own, it takes too long. Poke and know

I recently had an experience with a waiter that really brought down @Varine's point about them being in sales. The first waiter just asked "anything else? deserts?" and when the table shook their head said "ok" and left. Then the other waiter came in and started going off describing the deserts and you could see the heads turning, and they finally got a bunch of deserts
  • jonas jonas:
makes sense if you consider that the tip is basically a commission on sales

That's an arbitrary number. It could be whatever you want, really. Though one wonders what the use case is for uploading giant files to a forum these days.
