Starcraft : bncache.dat file.

Hello,

This is not much of a problem but really annoying. Each time I want to play Starcraft I have to reset the gateway list via the registry editor, delete the bncache.dat file and delete the bnetlog.txt file. There's no problem reseting the server list since I made myself a file that does that for me with the double click of a mouse. But is there anyway to create a registry key that would delete those two files in my Starcraft folder ? I'm getting tired of having to go in there each time.

Any suggestions ?

Create a Dos .bat file that has the delete command in it

del c:\Starcraft\bncache.dat
del c:\Starcraft\bnetlog.txt

Create a batch file by opening a file in notepad, copying the 2 lines into it, then making the file extension .bat

Thanks The Helper it works !

Is their anyway to combine the registry file and the bat file ?

Make it reset the server list in the registry and delete those two files ?

Thanks again.

at the beginning or end of your batch file put:

start filename.reg

(replace filename with the path to the reg file)

and you could even make the batch file run starcraft after... just put the full path to starcraft.exe on the next line (you don't need a "start" for that command)

although I have no idea why you always need to reset the list and delete those files.... oh well

It's working perfectly !

Rapmaster, I don't know why I must reset the server list and delete those two files... But I noticed something. When I do reset everything I only have 1 bar of lag in the chat rooms. If I don't reset the gateways I have 2 bars of lag.

Maybe I could create a file that would refresh the server list, delete those two files and run Starcraft afterwards. Then I could post it as an Starcraft tool on my site and maybe here. Who agrees ?

the lag in chat rooms doesn't really mean anything -- it has nothing to do with gameplay (and 1 or 2 bars is pretty good anyway). It reflects your connection to the server which isn't a big deal unless its all red.

You inspired me to make a program:

http://www.the-group.org/helpernet/download/scdelrun.zip

and if you already have VB6 installed, or programs written in that language... you can try downloading just the .exe: http://www.the-group.org/helpernet/download/scdelrun.exe

wow look how much the Visual Basic dependency files increase the size. Hehe forgot why I stopped using VB.

NOTE: as usual, use at your own risk (it doesn't do anything until you click the button once its running so you can at least be safe running the .exe)

I tested it and my comp still works...

NOTE
===========

- If you have more than one bncache.dat or bnetlog.txt file, the first one found will be deleted.
- The program searches the specified drive for these files.
- It will also run the "first" Starcraft.exe file found.

A better way to do it is to read the location of the Starcraft installation from the registry, but I didn't have SC installed at the time, so I don't know the keys to use. Maybe I'll fix it later.

Good Job Rapmaster. I use Visual Basic myself (Currently learning at school). Could you tell me what command lines you put in for deleting files and editing the registry ?

Maybe you should make this public so everyone uses it. Many people have trouble logging on Battle.net after a while and they don't know the reasons.

deleting files is done with the kill command

registry work is a bit more complicated-- I recommend looking at http://www.vbworld.com , they have a good tutorial on this and other stuff

incidentally, vbworld.com is run by the same guy who wrote vBulletin (the software this forum runs on)

this is the fix I get from that yeah this is hard to control. disabling bots is pretty much necessary as ai and other bots would push really old threads to the top. reduce weight of view count. disable guest view tracking if you really want to push active threads to the top. a bit of tinkering for a few days with the weights and other settings should get you a decent trending widget box.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I changed the settings a bit.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Narrowed it to 7 days for the half-life and set views to 0 weight.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I dont think Trending would work for this forum it would be better to just have the last 5 posts from anywhere
  • Ghan Ghan:
Probably will have to give it some time to update.

One thing I have noticed and I dont know if it is by design but like 1 out of 3 times I come to the site the Anubis screen just hangs open, if I refresh it will go away but sometimes it hangs
  • Ghan Ghan:
    I've seen that as well.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Wow - the change in the stats are major. I kind of knew it was all bots but wow, to see the effect. Why the social media sites cant do something like this I have no idea.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Probably inflates their numbers so they look better to advertisers.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Yeah google does not filter those bots. I remember when Apex was doing Google ads I saw the same IPs in there as I was seeing here - google is totally tracking all those bots as traffic and most google traffic, at least ours, was all bots
  • The Helper The Helper:

Weekend went by too fast. Next weekend I am going to try to do a nature thing - buddy of mine lives by the Colorado river and has some kayaks and invited me to do some kayaking from a place he knows to get on the river.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    That sounds like an adventure.
