Make sure you have the latest patch for StarCraft, you can get it here

http://www.blizzard.com/patches/

or by logging into Battle.net. Make sure you have the latest drivers for all your hardware, and make sure you have the latest patches for XP (I think XP does that automatically).

If you still have problems look for .err files in your StarCraft folder. If you have .err files and you are sure you can recreate the crash, delete the .err files and play until it crashes. Then open the .err file in notepad (there will be a new one), copy and paste the information contained in a reply to this message and we will try and help you further.

Also, if you are getting an error message please let us know what that is also. Please also include your system specs if you reply.

Hum... I thought we fixed a similar problem before. I'll search the archives.

Allright, after searching the archives I came up with these possible causes.

- Bad Ram >> Test with this program: http://www.goldmemory.cz

- Overheating >> Often this would be accompanied by spontaneous rebooting of the computer.

- Device Conflicts (Right click on "My Computer" on the desktop and then properties. Under the Device Manager tab, any conflicts would be reported if any with a (!) besides the device's name.

- Corrupted Windows installation >> Open Start menu, Program Files, Accessories, System Tools, System Information.
From the tools menu, try the different options. It will tell you if anything is corrupted.

Also, this could be caused by your motherboard. What are your full system specs including your motherboard ?

about the overheating...any way to fix this problem?? i think i get this problem...but it doesnt happen until after a few minutes after closing sc/bw. the icon or button on the bottom does not go away, and after about few minutes, my computer simply restarts on its own

If you suspect overheating activity, the first thing you should do is unplug your computer, open the case and start dusting. The fan must be clean.

well, how come this doesnt happen to any other programs?? starcraft is a relatively non-cpu-hogging program, yet its the only one giving me this problem.

yes

I've been having this problem for months now. One day my computer jsut started restarting: sometimes it boots me to the desktop, sometimes it jsut restarts, and somtimes it gives me the blue screen. I'm on XP and latest drivers for everything. Even latest BIOS upgrades. I'll keep checking back here every day or two to see what we can come up with...

Yes, I've been having my computer crash on Windows XP Professional, and I can't do anything but restart my computer when it happens. It also had some weird glitches when I played, such as black and white ( no color ) regular playing. Weird. What I did was reinstall my computer with Windows 98 SE, and now it works fine again. =)

ive tried dusting, but it still happens...either ways, how can none of my other programs or games overheat my processor? ive even dedicated my computer for 2 weeks ripping and converting DVDs, which took 100% (literally) of the CPU. yet starcraft is the only program that does this...very peculiar

same here

Same here, my other games like Quake 3 and Ghost Recon (which is heavy on the cpu and video card) run fine. It seems to be a Starcraft-only problem...which is a problem, as it's my favorite game :/

Okay well update I finally found otu that it's probably the video card, as my computer restarted when I had brood war running in the background, and the blue screen said it was due to Nv4_disp drivers, and when I got back to the desktop, error reporting told me it was due to the geforce2 MX 400. Okay! So now I just have to drop another $50 on a video card.

sadly...

Yeah, I've been there many a time. Sadly enough every single drivers I've tried are fubared. Even the standard Windows XP drivers for my video card don't work (without messing up Starcraft). I've tried the 12.xx drivers, the 16.x, the 21.x, the 23.x, and now I have the latest 28's. NONE WORK.

Anyone want to buy a used geForce2 MX 400?

Now hold on, don't start selling it. I'm sure this problem is "fixable", we just need some patience. You could play Starcraft with hardly any video memory at all and you have a GeForce2, a card I want myself.

I'll get back to you if I think of anything.

Have you tried playing in compatibility mode ? (Right click shortcut, properties, compatibility mode, Windows 98 or 95)

Try both 95 and 98.

It's also very important you go to the Windows Update Site. They have an update for compatibility mode which I downloaded for my brother and it fixed issues he had with a game. Much like you, his game would crash without warning and he is also using Windows XP. He was ready to downgrade to Windows 98SE before I came to restore some sanity.

sounds good

Okay well, I am currently looking for the compatibility mode thingy, because XP doesn't think I have the CD in the drive when I run it in compatibility mode. SO on a previous install of XP I downloaded a CD Ghost drive thingy (which makes the computer think you have another cd drive), ripped the ISO of brood war from the disc, and then mounted it on the other drive. XP still wouldn't run starcraft in compatibility mode. For the life of me I cannot find the fix for this anywhere on the microsoft site...a link would help immensely! I've gone to Windows Update and either I already hve it or it doesn't appear when I scan for updates needed. So I searched the site and can't find anything either...

Update on this. It would be helpful if I could get this working in 95 or 98 (Starcraft was designed for 95 and would probably be more stable) but it will run in compatibility mode for Windows 2000. Go figure.

Update again. Starcraft ran okay for a little while and then froze up with the error:

This error appears to be caused by Win32.sys. (something) tried to page a non-pagable area.

I can't remember the (something) part but it doesn't really matter. This saga continues...

I searched in the archives and found this. Make sure you are logged on as the Administrator when you install this patch or try to play games.

I also found this.

Have you downloaded all critical updates from the Windows Update Site ? Do you have DirectX 8.1 ? Do you have the latest drivers for all you hardware ? What have you downloaded from the Windows Update Site ?

thanks

Hey man thanks for the help with everything, I really appreciate it. I have DX8.1 and latest everything for updates, drivers, etc etc. I will try these compatibility mode things and get back to you!

Yeah google does not filter those bots. I remember when Apex was doing Google ads I saw the same IPs in there as I was seeing here - google is totally tracking all those bots as traffic and most google traffic, at least ours, was all bots

That's the main thing with Anubis - no Javascript, no site. Typically you can still get the site to load without Javascript.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I remember the whole javascript thing, question - how many real people disable that?

Hell I guess I could go back on the stats to know that - we probably capture that and we know the before and after
