The game crashes within a few minutes of starting any new game. I have updated my drivers and followed Blizzard's advice and defragged my hard drive.

I play other games such as Medival: Total War, Counterstrike, BF1942, Medal of Honor Allied Assualt, Everquest, and others without problems.

Any help would be appreciated.

How long has Starcraft been crashing on your system?

When the game crashes, do you get an error message? If so, what does it say (post its exact contents)?

What operating system are you using and what are your system specs?

Which hardware drivers did you update?

Does the game crash when starting single player games and when starting multiplayer games, or just one type of game (which one)?

Are you playing a particular map or maps when the game crashes? I played Starcraft recently, and I downloaded a Use Map Settings map that made the game crash to the desktop a few seconds after it started. Strangely enough, the crash only occurred in multiplayer...

If you've done all of the Blizzard steps for Starcraft crashes and you're still crashing, I'm not sure what else you should try, as the steps cover what I believe to be pretty much all of the main causes of crashes. Most likely the issue is software-related, as Starcraft isn't demanding at all hardware-wise and you can play all those modern games without any problems. Either it's a software issue, or it could be a serious hardware problem, although I highly doubt it. If the game started crashing only recently, we should focus on what things have happened with your system recently, both hardware and software-wise that could explain the problem.

- I have the same problem as the topic poster, here are some of my hardware specs and such:

AMD Athlon (TM) XP 2000+
1.67 GHz
512 MB of RAM
SAPPHIRE RADEON 9000 ATLANTIS PRO/SAPPHIRE RADEON 9000 ATLANTIS PRO-SECONDARY (I don't know why there's two, I just listed whatever I saw in my Device Manager.)

- And as for the error screen. Yes, I do receive a blue stop-error screen when I play Starcraft. I managed to jot down what was displayed on the stop-error screen. As follows:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop-error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps.
Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for further updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need safemode to remove or disable components, restart your computer. press F8 to select advanced setup options, then select safe mode.

Sounds like you might have a Ram problem. Try checking your Ram with Gold Memory Checker. Unfortunately I am at a loss to find a link to that program for you. Basically it goes through your Ram and tests all of it. Bad Ram causes problems for Blizzard Games though you might not ever notice it running other games or applications.

Starcraft Help -

This is what Microsoft has to say about that STOP error:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/ddtools/hh/ddtools/bccodes_59k7.asp

Follow all of the steps in the description of the error and see if they help.

How long has Starcraft been crashing with that STOP error? Do you get the error with any other games or applications?

EDIT:

I agree that testing your RAM for errors would be a good idea. Make sure that your RAM timings are at their defaults before you run the test, otherwise the test might yield errors that could be misinterpreted as bad RAM. If you get errors when your timings are at their defaults, this indicates that one or more RAM sticks need to be replaced.

Here is a link to one popular memory tester program:

How should I make my timings by default? I'm sorry because im Computer-challenged.

Sorry for the late response.

To make sure your RAM timings are at their defaults, you need to go into your BIOS setup utility and find the timing settings. Your motherboard documentation should be able to tell you how to do this.
