Please help me!
I just installed the starcraft game on my windows xp, and i get the message that the cd is not on the computer. But the cd is there! This is just like when i used to install starcraft on windows 98. A file could solve the problem on 98. What can i do on xp?
Thanks a lot

Are you running the game in "compatibility mode"? A friend of mine recently put together a new XP-based system, and while troubleshooting a problem he was having with Starcraft, he noticed that running the game in compatibility mode will give you that error message.

Go to Start, Programs, Starcraft, then right-click on the Starcraft/Brood War shortcut, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab, and make sure that the check box labeled "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" is unchecked. If it was checked, uncheck it and click OK to save your changes. Try the game again.

Do you get that error message when starting the game from the Autorun splash screen or when you run it from the Start menu shortcut? What happens if you go to the Starcraft directory on your hard drive and double-click on Starcraft.exe?

What file are you referring to when you say "a file solved the problem on Windows 98"? I'm not aware of any Blizzard-made files that will get rid of that error message if you're getting it, however I'm pretty sure that there are no-CD cracks out there for the game. Keep in mind that the no-CD crack modifies your game executable, and if you successfully connect to Battle.net while using it, there's a possibility that your account(s) will be closed and your CD-key will be disabled. There are those who have never used hack or cheat programs and claim that their CD-key has been disabled for no reason; if those people used no-CD cracks, they might have found the reason.

To the best of my knowledge the Starcraft/Brood War CDs use no form of copy-protection, unlike the Diablo II and Warcraft III CDs. I have been able to successfully make a backup copy of my Starcraft/Brood War discs without any problems, and I have been able to make disc images of those disc without any problems as well. Therefore, I don't think this is an issue with a copy-protection scheme, which many Diablo II and Warcraft III players seem to have. I was going to suggest that your disc is damaged to the point that your computer can't recognize it, but if it worked right before you installed XP, I don't think that would be the case. I suggest you make sure that you're not running the game in compatibility mode, and I suggest you try starting the game up via the ways I described earlier. I also have the following "general" suggestions:

- Install the latest IDE drivers for your system (motherboard chipset). These can be obtained at your motherboard maker's or motherboard chipset maker's websites. While you're at it, install the latest drivers for the rest of your computer's hardware as well.
- Install all of the latest Windows Updates for your system. You can get them here:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
- If you're trying to play the game under a limited user account, try playing under a user account with administrative privileges.

Oh, in case anyone is curious about what problem with Starcraft my friend was having:

Whenever he connected to Battle.net and shut down the game (this problem did not occur if he did not connect to Battle.net), the taskbar button for the game wouldn't go away, and when he shut down the game via the Task Manager, he got one of those "send an error report to Microsoft" error messages (can't remember exactly what it said). He discovered that the "Norton Password Manager" program he installed (part of Norton Internet Security 2004) was the problem; when that program wasn't running, he could connect to Battle.net, exit Starcraft and have it exit normally.

Thanks a lot for your help man, but that didn´t work...
The compatibility mode is already off. I tried to turn it on, but no good.
The error message i see is this:
Starcraft is unable to read a required file.Your starcraft cd may not be in the CDROM drive. Please ensure that starcraft cd is in the CDROM drive and press ok. To leave the program, press exit.
I have the original game, made in Brazil by Tec Toy. This version show up problems on the windows 98. Yes, i think i used a no hack cd back then, and it worked fine. I know its illegal and stuff, but that was the only way to play the game that i bought.
Any more ideas someone?
Thanks a lot!

I didnt read everything that was said, but maybe your disc is scratched somewhere.

Back to the second poster, when you go to the properties, should any of the boxes be checked at all in the compatibility tab other then the compatibility mode?

Hi, this is the second poster...

No, none of the other boxes need to be checked.

I had the exact same error message talking about an unreadable file - so the game wouldn't start . I had my StarCrft.exe set to comp. mode (win 98). Reflecting what was written earlier in this stack I disabled the comp. mode again. In addition to this I closed all unnecessary programs in the systray before trying again -> booom!! it finaly worked !!
Now it runs even with all programs running that get started at system start.
Thanks to all who returned information and to the originator of this message stack for putting that question.

Best Regards
Ralf (Berlin, Germany)

Luckily I live in an age with electricity so it's way fucking faster, but when I was just a boy trying to find my place I had some hardcore chefs that made use do things like that by hand. It is WAY easier to get right by hand because you control it and can feel it, but it takes soooooo much longer. And on the scale a modern kitchen requires... I serve 400-500 guests on average per day right now, if I had 100 then we could do things way better
  • Varine Varine:
But we can't do that. In the winter yeah, but I HAVE to get people through here right now so I can afford the staff that we CAN do that. We have about 100 days of summer, and if that summer doesn't make us what it will, then I can't operate the other most of the year with my staff. The owner is talking about closing two days a week to cut down on labor, I told him he should cut down on vacations and it did not go great. I do think I won though, I have to keep my fucking core staff and they have to be gainfully employed
  • Varine Varine:
Sure some of them might take a second job, but I can't just cut my entire staff to unlivable hours, nor can I can cut them off all winter if I want them to come back.
  • Varine Varine:
And also, there is no fucking way I'm pulling these hours come september. I only do this right now because I have to, the second I don't have to be the one doing it I won't be
  • Varine Varine:
I have a 5 person core staff in the kitchen, not including me or Chef Ben
  • Varine Varine:
Though two of those people are likely not making it this year. One of them has been replaced, the other I am kind of trying to. He's being a giant bitch, today I had to get onto him because in the three hours before I left he had taken like thirty minutes for cigarette breaks
  • Varine Varine:
And he was also complaining to me the other day that he was out of weed so couldn't smoke any before work that day, and was confused about why I was annoyed he was telling me, his boss, that he is smoking weed everyday before work.

  • Varine Varine:
Like yeah I can tell. I don't need to fucking know.
  • Varine Varine:
So now he's getting scrutinized and will not be top of the list. I know I don't have the smartest people but I do expect them to have some common fucking sense
  • Varine Varine:
I did do a rare thing for me and hire a girl last month without warning. Everyone was made at me because I started her at like 21, but she worked with me before and I was like don't care. She made 19 at her old job and I wanted her to come work with me, she is the best

  • Varine Varine:
I'm going to get her a raise at the end of the summer. She wants to go to school again, but I want her to still work with me so.... she kind of can just tell me what the price is. I can go to 25 if she keeps up. I need to get her onto line more, that's what she wants, but I need her where she is and it's not fair that she doesn't get the little bit of raise that comes with it. She can do it no problem, I've worked with her there.
  • Varine Varine:
It's just hard to move and train people unnecessarily right now. And also the line fucking sucks, it's not any more fun. This is turn and burn so I have the bankroll, and everyone suffers for it
  • Varine Varine:
Eventually we'll get it balanced, we'
  • Varine Varine:
we're starting online orders and stuff, but I also turn that off all the time because I barely keep up trying to be the best at Sysco shit
  • Varine Varine:
I think it's gonna be a good fall and winter though. We're going to have a good staff, they will get along, they will be able to manage the workload and the complications, they know how to really cook this year, like every person on line knows their steak temps. Some of them use thermometers a lot and they don't always use them right, but they do know how to do it. Failure, especially in this field, is the only way to get better. They'll get it
  • Varine Varine:
They won't get feel down while they do the thermometer, but we didn't have an instant read probe when I was learning. Like they did but god knows how off it is, you HAD to do it by feel. Even if the chef was fine with me bringing my own, it takes too long. Poke and know

I recently had an experience with a waiter that really brought down @Varine's point about them being in sales. The first waiter just asked "anything else? deserts?" and when the table shook their head said "ok" and left. Then the other waiter came in and started going off describing the deserts and you could see the heads turning, and they finally got a bunch of deserts

makes sense if you consider that the tip is basically a commission on sales
