For a game project I'm working on, plenty of other icons are in progress but these were the first few I did for an early idea I wanted to implement.

I'm going to guess the cartoony nature of the game makes it okay that the proportions of the swords are totally out of wack. Pretty cool!

To some extent yes the proportions are intentional (the icons themselves won't be 100% representative of the actual weapon looks, I'm going for full on expression with these)

Here's some improvements based on another community's feedback (plus some additions!):

EDIT:

Potion seemed very out of place with its thick black outline so this is an alternative idea.

(Someone did still comment on the handle's shape which has been corrected, so they might look a bit better in that respect)

Thanks for your feedback!

I like the black line around potion. The handle correction does look nice as well.

I like the proportions and the black line round the potion looks better imo.

I'm making these in Photoshop!

I've had very mixed views on the potions, I've had people tell me to use a transparent line and people who want the line to be outright removed, plus you guys who prefer the black line :V

I'll see what I end up sticking with!

Awesome.

The black outline looks nice, as people said. I think the only that that seems odd there is the top half, since the emptiness and the lack of color (or just black and white) due to the transparency of the bottle makes it look like, well, it reminds me of like those cartoons you see in science class packets or something. Either one is good I think, I do enjoy the transparent one. Maybe find some middle ground for it?

I particularly like the nature sword since, as a vine, that's the one I would use.

Uh, the blue outline seems better. It's more suitable for the glassy theme.
Black line seems to solid to be a potion bottle in my opinion.

The angle of the mixture in the bottle isn't too correct if you see closely. The bottle mouth is angled in a way that it's facing more towards the screen. So the mixture should match the mouth angle. Then again, it's just small issue. It looks good as it is now anyways. :)

Hey!

Can I ask, what kind of a project this is? You can send me a pm, if you don't want to spread the word. I just like the style you are working with and I've worked on many games actually. I might be able to help, if you need it.

Seems to me that you got a tablet in your hands. I have one as well and I like to draw stuff like this : D

Cheers,

idk if this has been said but this cartoony feel reminds me of The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker
i love it and i can tell that eventho they have a cartoony feel they have a lot of design in them, which is easy to leave out in that kinda artwork, they look almost like high quality vector art, have you worked with illustrator before?

Lots of questions/comments, let's go!

A lot of my work has received comparisons between many LoZ titles, I've actually never a touched a Zelda game but it's nice to know that it follows that sort of art-style because from what I know the type of game I'm working on will end up having a lot of similarities in terms of game-play mechanics.

I tried the trial of Illustrator once, I never got around to purchasing it but would like to one day just to get more practice in. Besides that I haven't really used any vector based software besides Flash.

Thanks for your interest! Firstly, this project is likely to be a Flash game (until I can find the time to branch out in to other means of game development) and a dungeon-crawler; there have been a few popular games entered in to this genre recently (particularly in the indie scene) and I have a few ideas for the genre that I want to experiment with.

Generally, I cover all angles of my games except for sound and audio, I'm always open to offers from people wanting to provide a soundtrack (but of course it's way too early for me to be going there.) Thanks again for your interest in this project!

I have tried to use tablets before but I am incapable of using them so I just stick with a mouse, as you can tell I've had lots of practice :p

This is a good enough justification for me, I will stick with the semi-transparent outline.

The angle of the mixture in the bottle isn't too correct if you see closely. The bottle mouth is angled in a way that it's facing more towards the screen. So the mixture should match the mouth angle. Then again, it's just small issue. It looks good as it is now anyways. :)

Good catch, I will adjust the mixture.

Awesome.

Aha, somebody on another community likened the potion to stock art so it's interesting that you drew the comparison of science class packets! I will probably adjust the overall shape of the container at some point.

Thanks for all your comments!
