Health Synthetic Alcohol Gives Drinkers a Buzz Minus the Hangover

Still feeling the sting of New Year's Eve all these days later? A synthetic alcohol substitute developed from chemicals similar in composition to Valium could give users the pleasant feelings of tipsiness without affecting the parts of the brain that lead to barroom brawls, crippling addiction, and sleeping in your car.

Unlike all those bunk point-of-sale hangover remedies, this headache-eluding synthetic is being developed by some serious brainpower at Imperial College London. Professor David Nutt, one of Britain's top drug experts, was recently relieved of his position as a government advisor for comments about cannabis and MDMA. Now, he's trying to change the way Britons think, and feel, about getting drunk.

By harnessing benzodiazepines like diazepam, the chief ingredient in anti-anxiety med Valium, Nutt sees a future of drinking without becoming addicted, belligerent or -- and here's the kicker -- intoxicated. Using one of thousands of possible benzos, researchers are working to tailor a colorless, tasteless synthetic that could eventually replace the alcohol content in beer, wine and liquor.

Whats the point of drinking alcohol if you're not going to get 'intoxicated'?

Seriously, if you don't want to get drunk, just drink alcoholfree beer.
Prob. tastes better than some synth crap :x

You get drunk, you just don't get hangovers, it seems.

Did you even read the title? Do you know what intoxicated means?

Hint: It doesn't mean when you're drunk persay. Alcohol is toxic which obviously doesn't mean it's good for your health, you'd still get drunk, just not intoxicated.

And why would it taste like crap if it's tasteless?

The downside would be though, if it's tasteless, you wont know when you're drinking alcohol and you can drink more than you're limit without knowing it. Many more downsides come with this, but there are also a lot of positives. Drinking would be kinda boring without that strong taste of alcohol to get through though.

if you still get drunk, but don't get the hangover, wont that just make more people alcoholics? I see the benefit of not getting a hangover.. but that should be a reason to not drink in the first place, or at least not drink too much.. so I cant see how this would help.. hopefully this will be more expensive then normal alcohol atleast

Screw that dude needs to be cheap, and we're going to have a big TheHelper party in... whatever city is on average the closest.

Drinkers could toss back as many glasses of the swill as they want but would remain only mildly drunk from first drink to last, keeping good-timers within legal limits whether they like it or not. If one did find the buzz too intense for a particular task -- say, driving home after a long night at the pub -- those warm feelings of inebriation could be instantly turned off with a simple antidote pill that mutes the synthetic's effects on brain receptors.

i prefer to get completely smashed myself...

and as far as hangovers go, i like to throw everything up, i usualy wake up refreshed the next day :)

but this could be fun for those social events where you just want a wee bit of the liquid courage.

Bavaria (a Dutch (I think) beer brand) has done a test before, they offered a party with free beer, just didn't tell it was alcohol-free beer and everyone appeared to be drunk ;) No synthetics, pure placebo :p

Aye, and they offered real beer, but told them it was alcohol-free. They didn't get drunk. There's a lot more psychology involved in drunkenness than actual bodily effects.

It still shrinks your liver though.

It can. Alcohol isn't bad for you unless you take too much.

How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
