This is so awesome. It's so awesome I just spent 10 minutes trying to express the awesomeness in words until I gave up.
Just try until you find it.. well, you have some years to go. lol

I can't express in words about the awesomeness of this, so, "Holy shit" but, creating an organism the size of cat, seems like it might beat NASA's need for cash.

Deep down, all men want a zombie apocalypse to arrive..
So that we have an excuse to wield machine guns and fire them for no real reason =x

I totally hope that, after years of research, they can develop (governmental) computer programs which can let them create life-forms in a method similar to Spore. Except at a more specific and complex level.

And then I'd get a job at the government.

Bout time.
However critics, including some religious groups, condemned the work, with one organisation warning that artificial organisms could escape into the wild and cause environmental havoc or be turned into biological weapons. Others said Venter was playing God.
Oh come on. Bio-weapons are so easy to make already that if we're not dying yet then we probably wont. If you know what you're doing you can make them in your basement with a little bit of luck (luck can be essential, since it can either give you a harmless type of bacteria which can be used as a vaccine, or can turn into something that has 100% mortality rate, which has happened). Who doesn't want to play god. I sure do.

this is awesome, but I won't be holding my breath for some actual multicellular complex life.

I would like to thank the internet for being there for me in my educational needs, or the random crap that happens in the world that doesn't pertain to my education.

Our chemistry teacher just today found out about the TED conference that Venter had and had to give us like a 20 minute lecture on the awesomeness of this act.... TH has had it posted for five days. Yay internet!

Deep down, I'm hoping that this will lead to bio-engineered zombies taking over the world.

Does that make me a bad person?

No, it just means that you play too many Zombie Shooters.

How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
