i need serious help! i havent had this much trouble out of my computer. everytime i boot up, it says:

Windows protection error. Youneed to restart your computer. System halted.

I tried changing cmos settings back to default, that worked once, then screwd up again, i tried safemode, that works 20% of the time. i tried step by step confirmation, that didnt go over well..... i dont know what to do.

this is what happened. I built this computer myself....it has a 1800xp soyo mb, it kept saying 1150mhz at POST so, i opened it up and moved the jumpers from 200 mhz bus speed to 266, then the clock speed from manual setup to auto (thats what the manual said the jumpers were) boom, i start it back up, its on 266 mhz bus speed and it recognized the processor as an xp 1800+, it started up in safe mode, i restarted and it gave me that freakin error message, i tried to put all the jumpers back to default, didnt work. i talked to a friend, he said it was messing with my IRQ's, but i cant change them from cmos, or DOS using a start up disk. i forgot how to revert back to and old registry file with DOS commands, any one know?

so to make this more clear
you have a harddrive that had an OS allready on it .
then u changed mobo and cpu ?

did u do a full format ?

did u try a format ?

more info is needed

HAve you tried booting the PC with the Windows disc in the cd-ROM drive?

im running windows ME, i took the hard drive out and put it in this computer, and it booted up fine, i took the hard drive out of this computer and put it in the one that is screwed and it kept giving me the same error message. i unplugged everything possible today to make sure all the power drained out of the board so it would save anything. i dont know if reformatting will help since another hard drive with the same OS wouldnt work either, but i guess that is what i will try next. i can get into dos, using my me start up disk. havent tried a cd, but i will try my me cd on bootup.

ps, i also tried a registry restore in DOS, i managed to restore it. still didnt work. like i said, i can only boot in safe mode 10% of the time without that error, but it locks up after booting up.

*no success, sorry about the new thread. ive been up for hours working on this problem.

I wold still look long and hard at the BIOS/CMOS settings. Some BIOS progams screw up when you attempt to use a differernt HDD.

Barring that, recheck your cables. The plugs and jacks can sometimes be the root of all inconsistent computer behavior.

sounds the other puter had/has a different chipset .
so take all cards out .
format the hd
reinstall os.
install the latest chipset drivers for the mobo.
then install the vidcard
then add the cards one by one .
ie soundcard boot up , install drivers . power machine down.
next card
repeat process
then when all cards are installed get the latest direct version from the MS site .
done

i did that the first time i built it. but, i did disconnect everything last night, i mean eveything from the mother board, even the cmos battery. so when i have time to actualy work on it again, which is tonight or sunday after work, i plan to reformat, but i will try some other cmos settings. i dont get it because i pulled the jumper for cmos and let it reset itself by to factory default. and it still didnt help. hopefully all the power is drained from the mb by the time i get home.

Wow - the change in the stats are major. I kind of knew it was all bots but wow, to see the effect. Why the social media sites cant do something like this I have no idea.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Probably inflates their numbers so they look better to advertisers.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Yeah google does not filter those bots. I remember when Apex was doing Google ads I saw the same IPs in there as I was seeing here - google is totally tracking all those bots as traffic and most google traffic, at least ours, was all bots

oh wow, i bet i can post x links now and do the webp pics now giggity

We are now on Ubuntu 24.04. Had some issues with the style after the OS/PHP upgrade but now resolved.

Weekend went by too fast. Next weekend I am going to try to do a nature thing - buddy of mine lives by the Colorado river and has some kayaks and invited me to do some kayaking from a place he knows to get on the river.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    That sounds like an adventure.
  • The Helper The Helper:
400 users all online all looking at latest content
  • The Helper The Helper:
I wonder how all these bots that sit on the lastest content page get passed anubis or maybe they did not but they are just registering on whos online
  • The Helper The Helper:
showing up on whos online not registration
  • Ghan Ghan:
The first gate is stopping all the bots that don't execute javascript.
  • Ghan Ghan:
That's the main thing with Anubis - no Javascript, no site. Typically you can still get the site to load without Javascript.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I remember the whole javascript thing, question - how many real people disable that?
  • The Helper The Helper:
Hell I guess I could go back on the stats to know that - we probably capture that and we know the before and after
  • Ghan Ghan:
Real users can't really disable Javascript anymore these days.
  • Ghan Ghan:
The internet is broken without it.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Bot readable, not human usable.
  • The Helper The Helper:
    got it
  • The Helper The Helper:
    Happy Thursday!
