No, not the taxes you pay every month, old people Sales tax. This is a question I have, I never really paid enough attention in accounting to figure it out

I go to Best Buy and buy 3 CDs. Do they get the tax for each item, and THEN add those three numbers together for the total?

OR!

Do they add the three items together, and get the tax from everything at once?

However, when considering the math (I figured they'd do whichever costs me more, lol) I realized: What's the difference? It's all addition and multiplication, and thus, it doesn't matter what order you do it in, it'll come out to be the same.

The only time it really matters is if there's rounding (and there often is). I'm fairly sure most cash registers add up the tax afterwards.

The only difference is going to be about a penny anyway, who really gives a crap?

Silly goose, the math is the same.

But you realized that already.

And yes, could be difference in penny rounding. But I bet some computers carry out decimals anyway when calcing it, so its damn close.

one thing you should watch for that most people dont is getting your change back. too many times ive had someone who gave me a big pile of change short me 50 cents and give me like 10 extra pennies so it looks like a lot. And it happens all the time and when i notice it, i give them shit like you wouldnt beleive. its stealing my money.

Lets do math and find out

Pennsylvania has 6% sales tax (its where I live)
you buy 3 CDs for $20 each

6% of 20= $1.20
$1.20 times 3= $3.60

6% of 60= $3.60

This should answer your question.
