Dota 2 is an upcoming action real-time strategy fantasy strategy video game being developed by Valve Corporation and the stand-alone sequel to the popular Defense of the Ancients mod for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne. Formally announced on October 13, 2010 via the website of magazine Game Informer, the game is currently undergoing a closed beta phase and is scheduled for a full release in 2012. Dota 2 will utilize a free-to-play business model, with a social network based around the game and its community. Dota 2 will be released via download by Valve's content delivery platform Steam, on which the game has been developed to run exclusively for both game launch and update delivery. Dota 2 will run on Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X.

The game consists of session-based online multiplayer activity, with the primary objective of each match being for the teams to destroy their opposing team's fortified stronghold. Each player controls a player character called a "hero", who is given the responsibility of participating in team combat, which generally takes place along a series of lanes that connect their opposing bases, lined with defensive towers. The gameplay elements are largely incorporated from Defense of the Ancients, with the game's lead designer, "IceFrog", being the longest-serving and current developer of the Warcraft III mod. (Quoted from Wikipedia)

Game Status

Currently, the game is playable in its closed Beta phase. Invites are being given away every once in a while to current players as well as players who complete the Dota 2 Survey. Note that is it not guaranteed that either of those happen.

There are currently 75 released heroes, with a new one coming about every week. A new hero first enters the "Dota 2 test" phase, which can be played on a separate game client for a day, and then gets released in the full game client.

The available modes in public games are:

  • All pick
  • Random Draft
  • Single Draft
  • Captain's Mode

Additionally, the fun mode -wtf is also available as a cheat in private games.

Functionality

Dota 2 uses a public matchmaking system in order to rank players of similar skills together. It has currently not been revealed how the matchmaking algorithms match the players, but it's definitely in effect. The game is currently divided into 3 public "levels", which are Low, Medium, and High. The matchmaking system automatically selects a level for the player, and matches him with players of his level, although the player is also subject to a "hidden" matchmaking rating. This rating is ultimately what ranks the players between their levels of skills.

A player who leaves a game has 5 minutes in order to reconnect, otherwise he gets a loss and abandon. The first abandon is harmless, though the subsequent ones will bestow upon the player the "low priority" status, which means that he will get matched with players who have this same status for a whole day.

Dota Versus Dota 2

Right now, the main difference between Dota 1 and Dota 2 is the number of heroes available. A significant number of heroes haven't been released yet on Dota 2, and that affects balance a bit as some unreleased heroes are direct counters to some that are already available.

Still, what draws people to Dota 2 is their favorite competitive game being ported to a new engine with better graphics, and that is the core difference between the two games. Dota 2 character designs are very nice, most heroes are cool and their abilities too. Also, a number of engine limitations imposed by the warcraft 3 engine have been worked around by Valve developers.

Also, a huge feature which has been praised by players is the current replay system. It lets players watch a game from almost any angle, at any speed, or even watch the game in the perspective of one of the players. You can download the replay and watch any game you've played in the past, as well as recent games and "popular" games. The replay system is a key feature of Dota 2 and deserves a mention of his own.

Apart from that, there are subtle differences between the first Dota and this one. Anyone with a reasonable playtime of Dota 1 will feel comfortable playing Dota 2, as the interface and gameplay feel very similar to Dota 1.

The shop system is what first comes to mind. All the items are located within one shop interface on the right side of the screen, divided into a number of categories. Also, the courier is now automatically shared with the team, and has a number of useful quick commands. Within the shop are a number of "recommended" items for your hero, from starting items (like potions, quelling blade) to core items (blink dagger on Earthshaker, for instance) to late game items (i.e. butterfly on riki). Also, a number of small functions are located in the bottom-right corner of the screen right now. The first is the Town Portal scroll, which provides a quick-buy opportunity when facing imminent danger within a shop location. The fortify button is also located in this corner, at the very bottom.

The heroes are all grouped into one big group during the picking phase, which effectively reduces the confusion regarding taverns and which heroes are located where. Your team can see which hero you're about to pick (provided you clicked on a hero portrait), which helps regarding team composition and setup.

Any hero suggestions for a noob Dota 2 player who has almost 1000 games in LoL? I've been playing Invoker, because he's very fun, but one of the hardest champs out there.

Jungle, top at the moment. Mid occasionally. While jungle is my strongest role in LoL, I'd still want to be a lanelubber in Dota2 for a while.

Vellu:

It depends on what role you wish to play.

Support, Ganker, Initiator, Carry, Pusher, those are typical roles in Dota.

Some intertwine with each other, especially Initiator and Ganker, and other players in your game won't like it if you play a hero a way it's not "meant" to be played, such as Carry Vengeful (she's listed as Support and she's a very good ganker as well) or Carry Furion (listed as Ganker, mainly a good pusher).

But, of course, you're free to do whatever you want at all times.

Keep in mind that DotA is different than LoL in many aspects. My favorite heroes are those which kill other heroes effectively, that's why I usually play Gankers and Carry.

Heroes can "carry" in DotA which means becoming so strong that they can sometimes take out the entire enemy team without much chance for them. Some heroes "carry" better than others, some reach their carry state earlier than others, etc.

Actually I was just playing with having some kind of mention of the food forum and recipes on the main page to test and see if it would engage some of those people to post something. It is just weird to get so much traffic and no engagement
  • The Helper The Helper:
So what it really is me trying to implement some kind of better site navigation not change the whole theme of the site
  • Varine Varine:
How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
