A "religion" based on a science fiction novel written by L. Ron Hubbard. Basically, people are the vessels containing immortal souls of some benign creatures. At some point in the past, some evil space emperor rounded up all these immortal souls with his space cruisers and took them to Earth, where he was somehow able to make them lose all of their memories so they'd be trapped in misery for eternity... or something. I guess Scientology's aim is to help these 'immortal souls' (a.k.a. people) to remember bits and pieces of their past, so that they might somehow break free of this memory-loss conundrum and go back to their true existence.

Key phrase in that explanation: "...based on a science fiction novel..."

I'd support the Church of Euthanasia, if not for the fact that few people actually want to kill themselves regardless of how miserable they actually are in life.

Church of Euthanasia sounds halfway batty. I respect their ideals, but Christ... the four pillars of foundation of the church are: Suicide, Abortion, Cannibalism and Sodomy. I mean, come on. Cannibalism? And they even limit it to those who are already dead. If they're already dead, then why do you need to eat them?! Their whole notion is that there are too many people and we need to do what we can to purge the world of this plague that we are. I respect that they don't condone murder or any act of life-taking if it's not the person's own will, but the shit is still fuckin' whack.

But I agree, Aetherius at least gives a fathomable explanation to everything behind it. I'd be more prone to condoning a religion like that than most anything else.

I'm just having trouble with it. I can keep a fairly open mind about things, but this doesn't make sense to me. What's wrong with eating animals? I didn't see anything about that in my "research" (five minutes of reading wikipedia), but I guess the "more food to go around"(fuck, now I feel like Firecat) does make sense in a way, since they don't believe in forcing their practices and ideals unto others.
