Transfering data via Lan

Hi
I'm now trying to transfer a file from one computer to another :<
1 of them is vista, the other one is XP.
Both of them are connected with a router.

How can I move the file?

Google only gave me weird explinations that had no details or were only between two XPs :<

okay, I actually could get a connection up, but I think I'm doing it wrong. I have 'only' 480 KB/sek speed :<

Or is that maybe even normal?
Doesn't take much shorter then simply downloading the file again :(

kk, I guess it was even slower then downloading from the net. Took like 6 hours for a 7GB file.
50 minuts to go, so it doesn't really matter anyway now

the genius laptop went on standby and all was cancelled. ha-ha.

I guess I need help now anyway :<

Here's what I did to get connection:
I dropped the file in the shared documents folder.
On the laptop I then went to the window where I see all computers that are connected via lan, double click on the PC and copy paste the file onto the desktop of the laptop.
As said speed was veeeeeery slow :<

Whats wrong?

If its WLAN, I guess your WLAN just isn't faster. Some interference by a wireless phone or thick walls or sth like that. You could try using a cable.

well, I actually use this kind of LAN, that uses the normal energy cabels. D-LAN is it, I think.

And I turned that auto-standby off, ofc :<

Make sure all computers are on the same workgroup, same IP address subdomain(such as computer A = 192.168.1.10, computer B is 192.168.1.x), all firewalls are turned off, use cabled connections to the router.

Using your hard drive for other uses while this is happening will obviously slow down the transfer rate.

General rule of thumb, laptops have 5400 RPM hard drives in them. A desktop usually uses a 7200 RPM laptop. So the max speed you'll get is the speed of the laptop's 5400 RPM.

    Actually I was just playing with having some kind of mention of the food forum and recipes on the main page to test and see if it would engage some of those people to post something. It is just weird to get so much traffic and no engagement

    I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.

    It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done

    I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
