World Two Suns? Twin Stars Could Be Visible From Earth By 2012

Hey! No one ever mentioned that Orion will lose his arm! :(

That's got to be one of the dumbest articles I've ever read. The professor in the first article never said any of the things they're counter arguing...

He said it MAY happen in 2012. Never said it would be as bright as our own sun. Never said the particle would be harmful. Never said the sun would heat our Earth.

Read the article, don't look at the unrelated image.

A second sun by next year? Not gonna happen!

And you say this because? Didn't know we had an astronomer on these forums.

oh come on sqrage.
the article i posted isnt any dumber than the first article.
the first article is like...

"a star may go super nova in 2012!
the neutrino shower could be beneficial to earth
update 1: our source doesnt actually say the neutrino shower could be beneficial
update 2: we dont actually know when it will go super nova"

If there was going to be a second sun by next year, then scientists probably would have known a long time ago or more than a year. Since it's only showing up now, it's probably not going to happen

The idea of having 2 suns is really 'omg this is so cool'-ing me :D

1 idea here: what if 2 suns will cause the day and night to become only day? then school will be forever, ahh!!!

I think we'd have far bigger problems then that :p

If we did have another sun I assume we would get used to it in time. I'm sure gravitational pull would be awkward though.

figure eights?

i really hope we get to see this, but i hope its only during the day. i like my night times :(

you guys do realize this star they are talking about is 640 lightyears away...
just because it might supernova doesnt mean it will suddenly have a huge gravitational influence on earth.

someones all super serious today.

does this mean that all the planets around it will just blow up? i never really thought about what heppens to planets when their stars just go blam.

The ones nearest to it get engulfed by the explosion and vaporize. Not sure about the ones further one.

whenever this happens, itll be a great time to get married . Theres always the off chance that the particles from the super nova super collides with the sun and the sun in turn goes super nova which would spell doom for all mankind.

I never said that this super nova would have a gravitational effect on earth at all. I was merely stating that if we had two suns in our solar system that it would create some interesting effects on Earth. Jupiter is commonly refereed to a failed star and some of us were merely speculating on the idea of being a binary solar system.

Jupiter is called a failed star because it is made of the same elements (hydrogen and helium) as is the Sun, but it is not massive enough to have the internal pressure and temperature necessary to cause hydrogen to fuse to helium, the energy source that powers the sun and most other stars.

No there isn't... do you know what a super nova is? It's when a star dies.

I bet the Illuminati ordered the UN not to undertake anything in response to the supernova issue!

If light took 640 years to get from the supernova to Earth, I don't think any 'particles' from the supernova are going to get here anytime soon.

They get fired off at extremely high speeds, and become meteors (possibly breaking up into multiple, smaller ones), left to float around the universe until they either hit something, or encounter a star/planet with enough of a gravitational field to keep them in orbit.... I'm guessing.
